This is looking to the East from the East Bay Hills into Contra Costa County in the San Francisco Bay Area. The town below is Orinda, California. The highway is Highway 24 and there is a BART station (light rail) between the two sides of the highway.
The mountain in the background is Mount Diablo. Mount Diablo is an extinct volcano. It is one of the few places in the SF Bay Area that regularly gets snow (but normally melts). Grizzly Peak is another and that is rather close to where I am. Two interesting bits about Mount Diablo are there is a set of ponds near the peak. They are isolated from the rest of the water system and are spring fed. Some time ago, decades I think, someone introduced goldfish into the ponds. They have been there since. Secondly, there are coal fields at the base of Mt. Diablo as well. These date to the Miocene and were mined when coal was a major power and heating source for the Bay Area. They have not been mined in several generations though and are now protected. Should civilization fall, you guys know where to look for dirty, but potent power around here. ;)
The sky and the clouds are what induced me to snap the shot. It was gorgeous yesterday and looks to be again today. However, as I stated in my last post, my head and face got scorched badly despite the use of sunblock. Since cancer runs in my family, I need to stay out of the sun for a few days.
