The adult length is 1 to 7 cm, depending on the species. Grasshoppers usually have large eyes, and are colored to blend into their surroundings, usually a combination of brown, gray or green. They are brightly colored to warn predators that they taste bad. The female locusts are larger than males and have a sharp point at the end of their existing abdomen to help them lay their eggs underground.
