Chattanooga's Tennessee Aquarium: Part 4

Our journey through the aquarium was coming to an end as we headed to the deep sea exhibits.

In the previous entries of this series, my wife and I spent some time walking the grounds and visiting the seahorses and starfish, we survived rats, alligators, snakes, and comedic turtles, and we were whisked away to a tropical paradise with weird monkeys and colorful butterflies. As the grand finale to our adventure, the aquarium's maze of rooms and exhibits brought us to the deep sea.

The following is a true account of our time below sea level.

As we made our way under the sea, we first stopped to visit a few shallower-water friends. We were able to get fairly close to this one, despite the fact that it was likely very dangerous.

IMG_1129-1.jpg

I thought this fish had eyes, at first. I'm still not sure if it did. Good thing there were no natural predators in the tank with him.

IMG_0925-1.jpg

I don't know what kind of fish this is. I'm not even sure if it is a fish. I think it might actually be a duck-billed platypus.

IMG_1064-1.jpg

He was enjoying his time with the humanfish visitors.

"Weeeeeeeeee!!!"

IMG_1033-1.jpg

"Hi guys. Will you be my friend?"

IMG_1071-1.jpg

We moved a little deeper into the ocean and found ourselves swimming with the bigger fishes...

IMG_1236-1.jpg

And turtles...

IMG_1233-1.jpg

And...

Shark!

IMG_1240-1.jpg

We didn't stick around. It was too scary. (And the turtles and sharks were moving around too quickly to get any good photos.)

So, off to the lowest levels in the sea we went. This strange creature was there to greet us. It looked like it was crying about something.

IMG_1243-1.jpg

We found a deep-sea reef of some sort.

IMG_1287-1.jpg

IMG_1288-1.jpg

And some silly bright fish. Don't they know that bright colors aren't very good camouflage for dark places? They're going to end up eaten someday...or stuck in someone's fish tank.

IMG_1261-1.jpg

IMG_1266-1.jpg

We entered the bottom floor of the exhibit and were invited to try some jelly. But there was some confusion, because all we saw were these stringy looking objects floating around in tanks.

IMG_1245-1.jpg

We asked someone where the snacks were...but they just looked at us like we were stupid. Then I figured that they probably didn't speak any English.

IMG_1247-1.jpg

As we walked around looking for help, we overheard a kid talking about the "jellied-fish." Then we realized...

The objects in the tank are the jelly! But we had never seen jelly like this before!

IMG_1248-1.jpg

I asked one of the employees if the jelly in the tank was made from fish - and if the water helped with the jellifying process. He laughed at me.

IMG_1250-1.jpg

I thought that was pretty rude, but I wasn't going to let it ruin my afternoon.

IMG_1253-1.jpg

Then I saw a sign. It said that the objects in the tank were actually "jellyfish." Apparently, these things are a type of sea creature that is alive...not jellied at all. And they're not tasty either.

In fact, they can sting you!

IMG_1254-1.jpg

Why would anyone name these "jelly" fish??? It sends the wrong message entirely and can easily confuse children!

Think about the children!!!

IMG_1285-1.jpg

Now that my wife and I understood what we were dealing with, I decided to just take pictures and not worry about eating.

This one was called, "The Upside-Down."

IMG_1268-1.jpg

Taking a video of these would have captured the flow of changing colors inside of them. But this isn't a videography post and we have to be careful with the tags we use.

IMG_1284-1.jpg

IMG_1282-1.jpg

"Look! I can put my tentacles over my head!"

IMG_1271-1.jpg

I think these two were having an intimate moment. New baby jellies coming...soon.

IMG_1272-1.jpg

I simply cannot believe that I didn't get a single photo with the entire trail of tentacles.

Don't worry. I fired myself.

IMG_1273-1.jpg

"Jellies to the m000000n!!!"

IMG_1279-1.jpg

That's all for the Tennessee Aquarium Series! I hope you enjoyed it!

What was your favorite part? Have you ever been to this aquarium? Do they have any new or special exhibits now? Tell us about it!

Thanks for stopping by once again to experience some of my summer vacationing! There's still so much more to come, so stay tuned!

All photos were taken with my Canon 6D.

Spectacular photos @ats-david, When I see a jellyfish on the beach I swim like Phelphs, but jellyfish really are extraordinary animals.

I don’t go in the ocean. Did you know that there are sharks out there?

hahaha, I have not really seen any in the ocean, I only saw them in the big Aquariums and in the Oceanografic of Valencia.

Shallow water fish captures you taken get fairly close @ats-david. Awesome but some captures unbelievable. deep sea decorated from beauty designing various fish modules, plants. jellyfish models dangerous lot, but attractive.Actually very Spectacular photos.
Resteem your post.

Your adventure is most awesome & amazing. Necessary needful one for currently condition. Gorgeous photography you sent here with use great photography skills and tough effort. I know that seems is very easy to eyes, but take was tough task. Lots of jelly fishes shown delightful under the water i have never seen. Great skillful and useful project.

The "We found a deep-sea reef of some sort." photographs reminded me of Christian Riese Lassen's paintings.

Nice story, very creative.

I visited several aquariums in Europe. Barcelona (I remember the sharks) and that of Genoa. In Valencia I visited The Oceanogràfic the largest aquarium in Europe where you can also watch a dolphin show. In short I like a lot ... much more than the zoo!

A dolphin show? Like Sea World? Do they have to abuse the dolphins to make them do tricks?

I do not think so, I do not hope ...

That thing look's like a platypus shark lol. It's super weird indeed. All the jelly fish are scary though. I don't like jelly fish at all. We have a small type here which aren't as bad as some of the ones I've seen out at Daytona Beach. I actually was running on the beach and slipped on a dead one once when I was a child. Great photos sir!!!

If I ever am in Tennessee I'm going to check that place out for myself.

I actually was running on the beach and slipped on a dead one once when I was a child.

That sounds like it was quite humorous...like slipping on a banana peel. Did you feel cartoonish? Should I carry a bag of dead jellyfish around just in case someone ends up chasing me down the street?

hahhah like Mario Kart! Definitely not something a lot of people can say they've done. Seriously though they are extremely slippery.

What's so cool is they let you in the tank to take those closeups!

Yeah, I thought they were being cool too! But then I realized that the jellyfish sting...and they locked the lid on the tank.

I died.

That sucks. Tell your wife I'll be over to pick up your XBox and new 4K TV on the 26th. I'll thank Steemit for them (for you) with a post!

fabulous aquarium shots! No, I have not been to that aquarium, but I have been to the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta a couple of times. it's a really fun place to visit. You can even go through a "tunnel" to end up beside the penguins.

My wife wants to go to the aquarium in Atlanta. We might have to stop in there when we go back to Lookout Mountain. She wants to see the whaleshark!

You will love it! My son used to work there.

stunning photos @ats-david, particularly of the mysterious jellyfish.

As always, loved your tongue-in-cheek patter.

I have no idea what the first photo is but if i used it beerbot would flag it, lol.

Very slick and professional grade photography,

nice pictures again, i have never been there, i wish :-) But have you can sit down and been to one in Auckland new Zealand, and one in Hungary and ours in antwerp, it always amazes me , you can sit down and just start staring :-) Why did they not understand you ? you speak the same lanquage there no? Yellyfish , i remember once on a beach in Holland the first time i saw them, big pudding forms on the beach like a colorfull party, loved it but noone was allowed on the beach it was like an invasion hahaha. But i used to be a diver and saw them afterwoulds many times in the water. and then they are just so much beauty . Really stunning like from a other planet.

Looks very weird but nice effect

Excellent post, I invite you to visit my blog.

As a photographer I can say that this is very interesting post!

very interesting and strange and beautiful species at the same time! ^^

Omigosh, that Turtle is beautiful... and I love love that 1st one w/ all the designs on his back !

Whoa, those couple of shots of the REEF (the 2 in a row) were shockingly beautiful .. Kudos on those, they have such depth to them (I mean, they seem 3-D ).

Additionally enjoyed/appreciated fully the #JELLYFISH Imagery. I saw the Monterey Bay Aquarium's fantastic exhibit on these wonderful, luminous creatures (been 20 years now or so, Yet It still IMPACTS me) .

I'm one who had the luxury of taking a few Marine #Biology courses, so these TYPE of posts at Steemit are my fav's !

Hands down the BEST Photography + Write-up I've experienced this week - actually it's a privilege to call u "a fellow steemian".
