On long winter evenings, old Tom recalled his youth. It was a glorious time. In March, he drove along the rooftops of familiar cats. And in the summer he was usually engaged in hunting.
Долгими зимними вечерами старый Том вспоминал свою молодость. Славное было время. В марте он гонял по крышам знакомых кошек. А летом обычно занимался охотой.
Чаек он обычно не трогал. Тут можно было и по усам получить. Но Том любил за ними наблюдать и представлять, что он большой и задаёт им жару.
He usually did not touch the seagulls. Here you could lose your mustache. But Tom loved to watch them and imagine that he is big and sets them the heat.
Другое дело воробьи. Они, конечно, шустрые, но тем интереснее охота.
Sparrows are another matter. They, of course, are nimble, but hunting is all the more interesting.
Том усмехнулся в усы. Да. Не каждая охота была удачной. В тот раз хитрая воробьиха его заметила и даже подразнила, прыгая с ветки на ветку. Как он крался, как возбуждённо подрагивали его усы...
Tom grinned at his mustache. Yes. Not every hunt was successful. At that time, a cunning sparrow noticed him and even teased, jumping from branch to branch. How he sneaked, how his mustache trembled excitedly...
Обхитрила и улетела. Бывает... однако. Том вновь усмехнулся.
Outwitted and flew away. It happens ... however. Tom grinned again.
А что делать... Разве что пойти на чаек посмотреть.
And what to do ... Unless go to see the seagulls.
