What makes a great photograph? Certainly there are technical issues to consider, but assuming everything like exposure, focus and composition are up to snuff, what is it that makes a photo more than simply a good photo?

I’m sure the answer to this question will vary from person to person, but from my point of view here’s what it takes. A great photograph tells a story, but not the whole story. It gives enough information to draw the viewer in, then it allows them to interpret on their own. You might say it this way, a great photograph is a bit of a mystery.

The picture I have posted today is one that I believe has this quality. It leaves you wondering what character might go with this scene. The picture gives clues, but not enough information to tell the whole story.

Think creativity and artistic photography makes a Picture Great, Thanks for sharing @beginningtoend

Glad you enjoyed it.

There really is mystery in that photo. A great photo has a sense of compositional balance, something that acts to draw the eye into it, unconsciously perhaps. Into the photo, and into the story. And yes I agree - a great photo does tell a story. Perhaps many different stories. Leaves you asking yourself - what is this all about?

I was going to write a poem for this but ran out of energy, perhaps another day.

composition color value contrast and lighting... :)

All part of it, it always is frustrating when some fail to recognize all that goes into getting just the right shot. It’s more than point and shoot.

I'm more all about the emotions it evokes, followed closely by the story it conveys. All that technical stuff is just icing for me. As long as it tells a great story and it brings out emotions that the viewers relate to, I already consider that a top-notch photo.

Your right all the technical stuff matters but emotions and story are what make the picture.

A great photograph tells a story, but not the whole story.

It's kinda unrelated, but E.H said something similar about good fiction. Revealing 25% and concealing 75. Terrific photograph.

Thanks, Ernest, great writer, a less is more kind of guy.
