Travel Diaries: ✨ Penang’s Heritage Clan Jetties.

in photography •  7 years ago  (edited)

A beautiful floating Buddhist temple, and 7 jetties named after each of the Chinese Clans who settled in Penang during it's peak. The Clan Jetties are a must see if in Penang!

The Clan Jetties are remnants of settlers from Fujian province in China who immigrated during Penang’s maritime hey-day. There are a total of 7 jetties, each one named after the respective clans who settled there. They are the Lim, Chew, Tan, Lee, mixed Clan, Yeoh and Koay jetties. However, the Koay jetty was demolished for residential flats in 2005.

The Clan Jetties are a great place to explore during the day and has colourful walkways and signs to lead the way!

I chose to go at night for the lights!

My favourite photo from the trip! ✨
It took a good half hour for me to perfect this, and the waves were no help as they shook the wooden walkway.

The jetties are essentially a cluster of wooden sea houses built on stilts. It features narrow walkways and continues a little ways into the sea.

Not the best, but it was close to midnight and we needed to get home.

Back in the day, dock workers (coolies) and new migrants lived along the jetty. Some were fishermen, others boat repairmen. They established a community in order to keep their traditions alive.

To this day, those belonging to particular clans still live here. Some are fishermen, and some have opened restaurants along the jetty.

The Head Boo Thean temple from afar.✨

A personal favourite is the Tan Jetty; for the spectacular view of the Hean Boo Thean Temple in lights come nightfall. The temple appears to be floating as the lights sparkling along with the lull of waves.

Do pay the jetties a visit, they are easy to get to from Lebuh Armenian (Armenian Street) - ask for Pengkalan Weld, Clan Jetties. Locals are friendly and willing to help. 😄

Those colorful lights reflecting on the still water are gorgeous! :))

trying to get it in a photo is brutal because the waves sway the docks a little and there goes the shot 😂 so worth it!

I read about those jetties. Another nice thing to see when we are in Penang :)

yes!! take a walk in the day light and go back at night to see the floating temple. it's just off Armenian St, so a short walk if you guys are staying downtown georgetown.
