Beautiful school that smells of history... University of Marmara/Campus of Haydarpaşa

Mekteb-i Tıbbiye-i Adliye-i Shahane (Mekteb-i Tıbbiye-i Shahane), the rostrum Sultan II. Mahmoud opened the Tıph until March 14, 1827 'to extend, it is the first medical school in Turkey's history. This is the first modern medical school of our country, then Takes the name of Mekteb-i Medicine-i Adliye-i Sahahane and served in various places in Istanbul.

Today, the Marmara University Haydarpaşa Campus , which attracted attention with its splendid architecture , started its construction as a medical faculty under the name of Mekteb-i Tıbbiye-i Şahane , during the reign of Sultan Abdülhamit II, in 1895 . On November 6, 1903 , building training was opened.

Thanks to this school, medical schools that have been scattered to that time and carried from one neighborhood to another have been assembled in a modern campus structure serving a single complex. The building has kept an important place in the history of modern medical education in Turkey, has witnessed the War of Independence, our near-term and important events in our history of medicine.

The construction of the new medical school, which stated that the construction costs amounted to 450 000 gold , started on 11 February 1895 . The architects of the building are Alexandre Vallaury and Raimondo D'Aronco . The building was built between the Haydarpaşa Military Hospital and the Selimiye Barracks on a plot of approximately 80,000 square meters . In the middle of the building is a rectangular courtyard measuring 140 x 80 m . This central courtyard is surrounded by corridors along four sides. On the south, west and north wings of the courtyard are the classes and other units.

On the eastern edge, there are five different masses seen from the ceiling of the building facing today's Tıbbiye Caddesi, and the architectural design of the school is separated from the barracks by this fiction. On the walls of the school, which has a construction area of ​​approximately 24,000 m2 , colorful granites, specially brought from Hereke and Bilecek quarries, were used; Marseilles has been brought water lime for the charges. Metallic materials used in the building were taken from Belgium, and metal-framed windows were made in Vienna. The courtyard in the middle of the school is designed as a garden for students; necessary plants and rare trees were obtained from France. Today the building was used as one of the campuses of Marmara University, and despite its size, it was built quickly and the II. In 1909 , military and civilian medicines were combined in the medical field of Haydarpaşa and named Haydarpaşa Medical Faculty . Cemil Pasha (Topuzlu) was elected as the faculty dean . The faculty of medicine has suffered during the First World War. Following the 118 graduations given in 1913, education was interrupted and the building served as Reserve Military Hospital in 1914 . In 1916 the teaching was resumed. In 1919, the school was under the control of the British occupation forces and faced great challenges and pressures during the training.

In spite of all these, physicians who were raised between Mekteb-i Hıbıbiye-i Şahane and Haydarpaşa Medical Faculty in the name of 1912-1922 succeeded to serve on the field of combating military medicine and infectious diseases. In the University Reform in 1933 , the medical faculty moved to the European side and the Mekteb-i Medicine Building was left to the Ministry of National Education and used for the Haydarpaşa High School. The clinic pavilions of the school are still serving as Haydarpaşa Numune Hospital.

The Medicine Building, which was used as Haydarpaşa High School during the 50 years between 1933-1983 , joined the Marmara University in 1983. Thus, the building, which is a witness to the history of over a century, has returned to the same function after serving Turkish medicine under the names of Mekteb-i Hıbbiye and Haydarpaşa Medical Faculty. Today, with its magnificent structure, historical identity and heritage, it is hosting the Departments of Law, Pharmacy, Nursing and Cinema - TV, including the Faculty of Medicine.!
