When Art Creates Towns - Drvengrad in 15 B&W photographs

in photography •  13 days ago

I think I picked the right title for this series of monochromatic pictures - "When Art Creates Towns".

Yes, that's exactly the deal here, this town, called Drvengrad or "Wooden Town" in English, had been created artificially, for a movie by Emir Kusturica, a famous movie director, actor, composer and musician.

I've watched many, if not all of his movies and I really love that dark sense of humor when he refers to the not-so-proud, from the perspective of the present days, history of the federal country he lived in. Even when it is not about the communist/socialist past, his movies still has a unique sense of humor, I'd say.

Pinches of despair, ridicule, self-mockery, unpolished characters, violence, honest talking and many more and last but not least, some cursing and proper swearing, at top master level, as we all know we, Balkans are good at :) (as a side not, I don't do that, at least not often :)))

So I hope now you're going to see the set of those images below in a new light, closer to how I percept that whole place.

On the last photo you see how the whole town looks from far away too.

Now have a smile by me! :) Even with a percentage of Balkan darkness, it's still a smile, right? :)

The first picture is top clickbait hahaha 😂

his movies still has a unique sense of humor

To ironize and self-irony is a skill and a privilege of many suffering peoples. Do our people have a sense of humor? I know for sure it can't make movies. And to build an entire city for this purpose - even more so.
I don't know how many of his movies I've watched, I think I watch them hard because more or less this irony is hard to watch, but this guy is a genius in his own way, like every Serbian 😉

Pictures are great! Have a soul, as already discussed. Love them!

Oh, thank you! It is natural to put the best one on the top, as it is visible without entering, right? ;)

He is a genius and I am not exactly sure he's Serbian :)

Well, he is Serbian, but born in Sarajevo to a Muslim family. I don't know if that changes anything about his genius. I think the ex-Yugoslavia stuff is pretty messed up and there's no point in going into it, and I don't get it anyway...

So probably Bosnian instead ;)
