If darkness wouldn't exist, we would not have know light. It is not the fear of darkness, but the absence of light that evokes emotions. Photographs are also just light splitting and bouncing in a controlled havoc that evoke emotions.
Somewhere in between a fast paced life and never halting universe, capturing a single visible frame of time brings forth the resurrection of a tale long lost in the past. The scattering of light trapped within a photograph, each pixel speaking a thousand words.
There lies the beauty of black and white photography. Taking out every single element of color and leaving behind what is and what isn't; the presence of light and it's absence. Darkness and light. Removing every word spoken by the splitting of light and allowing us to fill in the spectrum to give it a new meaning, one that we want to believe in.
It is an escape route to a world we are comfortable with, a route we want to create. Maybe in some ways, life is like a black and white photograph. We choose the colors we want to paint it with, give it a meaning we are worthy of and live it the way we wish to. Freedom exists, as long as we want to recognize it and give it meaning.
Sometimes I pass by Ludmila, the fruits babushka and grab a bright red apple on the go. She sits here with her home grown fruits among her vendor friends and they have the most beautiful time together. Just like most vendors she grows fruits in her backyard and sells them for a cheap price and an invaluable smile.

It is very tough to ignore colors and disregard everything they have to offer. There in lies the beauty of colors. Colors make life what it is, the different emotions they carry, the different meanings they provide...but black and white allows us to challenge those norms. It gives us a chance to hide what is shown and look at what is hidden. To find a perspective where what once was, isn't.
It allows us to break free from the tyranny of colors and plunge into a different world.

But life isn't monochromatic, and pictures do not have to be either. Why does monochrome feel so lovable, then?
Removing everything from a picture and leaving behind shades of light and darkness in someways evokes a lot of intimacy between the subject and the eyes, just like how someone you love from the depths of your heart suddenly removes everything from logic to calculations from the equation.

Ukraine is probably the most black and white country, in the winter. The snow makes you feel like you are walking on clouds, the sky is white with the snow falling from the heavens, the buildings and the tress all turn black from the overwhelming white around. Even the life is pretty much a clean slate, a new black and white coloring book. You fill it with whatever color you want and make a life that you would be proud to frame and hang on the wall.
