A different kind of war is taking place in Greece every Ash Monday (around end of February or early March). It is called FLOUR WAR and is taking place in the small fishing town of Galaxidi, about 3 hours away from Athens. For those of you that you may visit Greece that time dont miss it, you have a unique experience to combine civilization (Delphi ancient temple is just half an hour away) with lot of fun, wine and flour bombs. These dont harm they make you laugh.
During the Flour War villagers and visitors stage a street battle celebrating the end of carnival on Ash Monday, throwing flour bombs at each other. Usually flour is colored so prepared to get green, orange or blue which are the most common colors. Of course for those of you who dont want to ruin your clothes or shoes you can buy uniforms nearby. But i think it worths to become a mess once a year.
The Flour War is a traditional event which starts with the ringing of cow bells and ends in a colorful mess. The festive event dates back to around 1801 when the residents of Galaxidi risked their lives in defiance of the Ottoman rulers who were occupying Greece at that time and had forbidden the celebration of carnival by painting their faces with ash and dancing in the streets. (source:wikipedia)
Parade last about 3 hours, starts just outside the village and ends up to the port of Galaxidi, with lot of music, wine and madness. Dont forget YOLO (You only live once) so live the experience.
Here are my photos hope you like them
Photos were taken with a compact camera Canon S90, flour is quite bad for expensive cameras to be used.

These are stunning! I particularly like the one with the kids looking out out the window. Have you ever been to the Tomatina? It's basically the same concept, but they use tomatoes instead of flour. It's amazing and I'd highly recommend it, but if you're taking a decent camera, you want to make sure it's secured to you!
