Rome by night

This is probably my favorite picture I've ever taken. It was taken around 10pm in Rome, Italy near the top of the hill above the Colosseum. The reason I like this so much was that it was taken while the sky was completely black, but you wouldn't know it from the way it turned out. I'm not an expert photographer by any means so I really can't be sure I'm explaining everything accurately, but here's a rough explanation of what happened. I was using my Nikon Digital SLR in night mode. I set the camera down on a wall and started the photo. The aperture stayed open for about 30 seconds to take this photo and this is how it turned out. I love how the street lights glow and am amazed at the color in the sky (which as I said before was pitch black).
