The Fruit that Resembles the Pope's Mitre

These post is not about the head of the Catholic faith it's about the fruit that resembles much of the popes ceremonial head dress,I'm talking about the Wild Maracuja..

Scientific Name: Passiflora Foetida

In the Philippines, these fruit is called Santo Papa a creeping vine that yields an edible fruit.Santo Papa is a species of passion fruit that is also known by its common names such as bush passionfruit, wild maracuja,Stinking passionfruit. These plant favours moist areas and can tolerates dried ground and is known to be an invasive species.

The plants flowers are white in colour, the fruits are the size of a kumquat that contains a bluish-white pulp that is delicately flavored and mildly sweet, when the fruits are green in colour when immature and when it ripens its color turns into yellowish orange.

Santo Papa is considered a Protocarnivorous Plant meaning it traps and kill insects but lacks the ability to directly digest or absorbs nutrients from its prey like a carnivorous plant,it's the plants way of defending it's young flowers and fruits.

Another characteristic of the plant is that its leaves when pound or damaged gives off an unpleasant pungent odor, foetida is a latin word which means "stinking".
