Before electricity was available the australian windmills were use to pump water up for live stock or to move it between irrigations. In 1987 the first wodden windmill was build and ever since a very common object in the landscape.
Nowadays solar powered pumps are replacing the mechanical windmills which are more reliable and can be controlled remotely, which saves a lot of driving to maintain the windmills
I personally like them very much. A true icon of the australian outback landscape
