Sipapu Ski Fire Disaster

in photography •  7 years ago

Last year on our first trip to Sipapu Ski and Summer Resort we had quite the experience! Ben Evert and I were taking a lunch break, heading back to the truck when we noticed smoke building near the hotel. We rushed down to see one of the upstair lodges bellowing smoke and flames. Jumping into action, we first helped carry 1 unconscious to safety out of the room, with staff arriving on scene quickly after with keys - so we began pulling peoples belongings out of each room until it was finally too dangerous to go any further. A very new 4Runner had been parked underneath the room the fire originated from, and it’s owner never arrived to move it. I decided we had to move it or risk it catching on fire, so we located a truck with a chain, and I slid through the mud and puddles to hitch it up, and we pulled it to safety. The action did not stop there, as the first responders arrived and needed help running hoses to the river for water pumping. Eventually it was deemed a lost cause and to let it burn, at which time I pulled out my camera and snapped a few images. The staff was so very swift and accommodating, and acted perfectly during such a disaster.
