When I Was A Photographer - Reclaim The Streets

in photography •  6 years ago

Back in the days when I was an idealistic youngster, I suppose I was something of a hippy. Even though I was born in the 70s and not the 60s, I still felt like I embodied the spirit of that decade.

The spirit of free love, marijuana and righteous protest was instilled in me between the ages of around 16 and 25. Even though my parents were not of that generation either, I identified with those that were.

As such I found myself on various marches and protests, often not even really aware of what I was marching for or protesting against, I just knew I was right and the reason I was there for was just, even if it was completely obscure.

One such protest was Reclaim The Streets, me and my friends went on a few of these, and to be honest I'm not sure what we were trying to achieve or say.

I still look back on these pictures with fondness because there was a kind of sweet innocence to our protesting. There were others there that day that simply wanted to cause trouble, they ran around with masks covering their faces while looking for anything to smash.

We stayed away from all that, and these pictures remind me of the fun of it all. One of my favourites is of the 'naked protester' (pictured below). Seeing this picture reminded me that I used to see this guy at pretty much every march and rally. I have no idea what he was protesting against, or why he felt the need to be naked whilst doing it, but he seemed harmless enough and always made me smile when I saw him.

I like this picture below as well because while we were protesting god-know's-what, there were still people trying to get to work and go about their busy days. I felt the message on the back of her jacket was quite poignant at the time, now I merely find it amusing.

It's a shame that I can't find more of these, there were various Reclaim The Streets marches that I went on and took lots of photos at, however these are the only ones I can locate, hopefully one day I'll rediscover the rest.

It's amazing to find things(photos ) encapsulating so many memories...
In my collage day used to these relies for student right, those were pretty fun times...

Lol, I did join my friend for protest once too, but I knew the purpose... Lol

Good post.Great photography sir

I used to be one of those people that perferred to live the moment and build memories for a lifetime. I realized that building memories are great, but sharing thise memories and experiences is infinitely more difficult without pictures. Now I am a prolific photographer, wanting to document everything, especially now that I have children. There a special kind of joy coupled with contentment, satisfaction and nostalgia that one experiences when looking at pictures of past experiences that isn’t manifested during other activities. It is a special emotion specific to looking back on fond memories. I am happy that you found these pictures and hope you find many more to share! Thank you for the fine post @cryptogee!

Pictures and videos have the power to immortalise happenings..

I have been keeping quiet a number of them, but I will increase it for future references

The only true form of time travel is backwards with pictures and videos as the vehicle with memories as the power source!

Yea, that's why I used the word immortalise

Very poignant words. Life slips so fast, its nice to have something down the memory lane.

Having children exacerbates the slippage of time it seems! They’re born, you blink and they are walking, blink and again and they are starting school etc!

Hahahaha I was just a toddler myself last week! ;) But seriously, I dont have kids but i know its wonderful to watch them grow! Congrats on your family, @stwbll :)

Thank you @marzullo!

Great post and great pics, got me thinking about the whole counterculture movement and France's May 1968! So nice to read your memories. Thanks, @cryptogee!

Omg, you are protesting without knowing the purpose of the protest... Smile

What a free world children are living, they will never hide their identities, they just go ahead and express themselves, they don't care what you think about them, all what matter to them is what they want to achieve... Smile

Just look at that dude going on a naked protest... Lol
If he should see the picture now, I'm sure will be rolling with laughter... Lol

And the other lady with such a powerful message on her cloth... Well, I don't blame people for not joining you, when you yourself cannot define the purpose of your protest...

So, funny....

Still you have great old collection of photographs to cheer the old memories. Mostly when we see our old photographs and recall old memories we smile a lot due to our stupid acts in the past. This is the life so we should enjoy the every moments of life

Super photographer sir
