B&W or Color?

in photography •  7 years ago

Here are two shots from the Beautiful Emerald Lake, Yoho National Park, British Columbia. Great place to take the family. Hiking and canoeing are popular activities around here! A Sony A7 and 55mm Zeiss lens was used. Which photos do you like better, the Color or B&W?

Hello
I like mountain in black and white highlights the small hehe hehe
but the second one I like more the color
happy Saturday tip!

For sure B&W for the first one. Can I talk you into bringing up the contrast on the mountain in the back. It just doesn't jive with the rich blacks the trees in the foreground have. I know it's due a little to some distance/haze issues. My thinking is that if you're going to go to the trouble of making a photo B&W, why not go all the way and make it POP?

I can't disagree with that!
Thanks for your comment

Great post @daveks. This poto is cool

B&W for the first!

Color for the second one. I think it shows more depth in that photo.

Stunning photos! What a beautiful place!

Thanks for your comment, I agree with that!

You're welcome! Thanks for sharing your photos with us!

I much prefer the color shots :)

Thanks for stopping by!

Just awesome ...... thanks your grate post

Definitely B&W on the landscape, but for the kids, the color of their clothes pulls your eye right to them and their adventures, so color is a great choice on that one. Both great pics!

I think I agree with you @jed78!
Thanks for your comment

Both @daveks!

Good post very good. I like photography your.

I like the BW one for the mountain pictures. As you can see more contrast on the details of the panorama, while the colour on the mountain pictures seems a bit to plain :)

I prefer the black and white on the first shot because it isolates and retains the details textures so much better than the color does in this shot. I think it has more depth and (to me) it just makes a better picture.

The second one, I like the color because the interest seems to be on the people and what they are doing and clearly gives me the pop of color needed. Now perhaps that is wrong, but, it's only an opinion.

I chose the color, so that the scenery gradation remains prominent.

followed you!

I like the color one in both the photos. However, in case of the hilly scene, it is a close call between the color and black and white picture

Appreciate you dropping in!
Thanks

Good photography
I like

Color for sure!

Of course color photographs are best. But black and white photographs also have its own beauty.

I love your bw-photos in general. But in this case for photo no. 1 I prefer the colored version a little bit more. That's because of the slight humidity in the air. The bw version is not as expressive as the colored one. The different layers are accentuated better with the different colors (and these colors are nice and discreet anyway)
For the second photo I think the bw is perfect. It brings the focus directly to the people (your family?). The colored version is nice too but "just" 😉 a usual holiday photo (great for an album to remember fantastic family holidays).

Thanks for your comment!
Sometimes I waffle back and forth between which ones I prefer.

You're welcome! I know what you mean. Maybe you should ask more often for the opinion of people who do have more distance!? 😉

B&W +1

I like both the colour ones.

Agreed - color

The monochrome has it with these..

I had a quick mess around with a colour and B&W version for each. I think B&W for the landscape and colour for the one with the kids - although I think I put too much aqua blue in the pic with the kids, makes it look a bit surreal...

I think I prefer B&W for the first and color for the second

I'm on that same page!
Thanks

I'm a big fan of B&W but I actually prefer the color for both of these.

I think b&w for the first and color for the second, if I had to choose. The first one seems more sharp in b&w and more misty in color. :)

I have to admit that the colour ones make it for me.

I like both the B&W pictures.
