Mastering Fashion Photograph...with a Flashlight - Introduction

in photography •  6 years ago

Hello Steemians,

I'm pretty new to Steemit, so figured I'd share something I'm familiar with, photography. I've been lucky enough to work as a fashion photographer over the last few years, working in wonderful locations around the world. From Barcelona, Paris, St. Petersburg, Moscow, Los Angeles and New York City, I've traveled and worked with great teams using the latest and greatest equipment available on the market. From just about every type of light including HMI, tungsten, strobes and natural light. But nothing amps me up more than using an ordinary flashlight for lighting. We're talking about a small mag light. Like the ones you can buy at any home depot.

For those of you unfamiliar with light painting, it's basically the process of creating an images from a long exposure using only a flashlight (or other light source) to "paint", or expose parts of the image you want to show. One of the most famous fashion photographers to incorporate this technique is none other than Paolo Roversi. An icon and legend in the photography and fashion world.

While most photographers tend to use light painting in landscape, this technique might not be as familiar to those looking to do something special and magical with their portrait, fashion or people images. You can even incorporate it into still life work. The best part of this technique is that anyone can do it. You just need patience, practice and of course, a flashlight. Note: you can use a light bulb and reflector or other sources of light (even light painting kits), but before we delve deeper into other techniques, we'll stick with the flashlight for now. Here are some examples where I have used nothing but a flash light as reference.

If you are interested in learning this technique, please let me know by giving me some feedback or upvoting this post. I am planning on putting up some tutorials on here including some "how-to" videos that cover photography and cinematography. I really hope this is a welcomed opportunity for those who want to learn something about photography and film :)

Great shots mate. Can't believe you haven't got any votes for this post. Resteemed to give you a bit more exposure (so to speak ;) ).

Edit: You've been curated by revo. :)

Thank you!! I’m hoping to bring some knowledge and experience to the steemit community. I want to teach steemians that you don’t need expensive equipment to make professional beautiful images. Still trying to figure how it all works. :)
