My next festive honeybee and bottlebrush shot is this inflight composition. One of several inflights that are forthcoming, I really liked this one as a fuller composition rather than cropped in tight on the bee. In this shot you can better see the real evergreen look of the bottlebrush. Bottlebrush is not actually native but is a very well import that provides a great resource to honeybees over the colder winter months when other flowers are not blooming.
Twas the night before the New Year and all through the house, not a creature was stirring… but outside the house was another story! It’s New Year but here i am enjoying balmy temps around 70F so the honeybees who can fly as long as it’s over 55 are still stirring about the Bottlebrush.
Next up in this festive series is a portrait composed with the Bottlebrush. This was a bit of a lucky moment as the bee was crawling out from within the heart of the flower which as the name implies is a long cylinder of bristle-like red stamens. I noticed she was moving rather quickly towards me so I lined up for the shot and managed to get this one in decent focus before she flew off. I love the dof and point of view looking down the barrel from the tip of the flower which bears a tassel of green leaves and also love that the bee is looking right at the camera like she’s greeting me. It’s another natural light, wide aperture shot giving a similar dreamy look.
Leaving 2018 bee-hind with this final shot of my red, gold and green series for now. It’s been quite an amazing year in which I discovered macrophotography, which quickly became an obsession with insects, particularly bees and dragonflies. This further developed into a real passion for understanding them and capturing their amazing beauty with the hopes of inspiring people to love and care for them better. I’m grateful to all of you for the continued support throughout the year and I can’t wait to see what 2019 holds..!
Wishing you all much peace and love today whether you celebrate the New Year or not!
Cheers and see you all next year!
