I've tried out photographing cups with fairy lights as a background (from far away). They make amazing bokeh that is suitable for a good background and some creativity.
What I did was try to put the Bokeh Lights in the Cups. I was able to achieve the following photos:
I used a circular container for this shot. It had colored circle designs printed on it and this cup contained coins too. The source of light for illuminating the cup came from my cellphone which we placed under the cup.
The second photo is actually the same cup but was shot on a different angle/perspective and the colors here were also different: in general they looked brighter and warmer. The light was still from my cellphone but this time I was holding it up and shining it onto the subject from the side.
I also tried to capture another object aside from the printed-transparent cup by using a blue mug as an alternative. This time my cellphone (light source) was placed on the same platform the subject was and was in front of the mug.
I need to try and do this again to take better shots. Some things I need to improve on are:
- Need more fairy light backgrounds.
- Using other cups/containers/objects as subjects.
- Provide better lighting for the foreground subject.
- Purchase better camera lenses for this kind of photography.
- Try out DIY filters to change the bokeh shapes.

Here's how my set up looked like so that I can capture this kind of photography. Our place is a bit cramped and messy. I actually had to place the foreground and the background objects in the photograph rooms apart (1 room in between).
I had to zoom in all the way to 55mm focal length to achieve the bokeh on the background lights when I focus on the cup/s on the foreground.
(The cup/s were iluminated using the flashlight on my phone. Without it, you won't even see the cup/s in the photos.)
Afterwards, I edited the lighting and removed unnecessary objects from the frame using Photoshop CC.
Thank you so much!

I only have these yellowish lights. No other colors yet, sadly.

nice, It's like the light is coming from or going into the cup.
