While on a recent trip home to visit family on western side of Washington State I found an interesting visitor on the back of my Harley. From what I can tell from our friend google this is a sub species of Hawk Moth called a Spotted Sphinx. This was one of the largest moths I have ever seen having around a 2 inch wingspan and close to the same size body. Apparently these moths only come out in July so it was just luck that I happened to be home. The colors of this moth were beautiful but it all was overshadowed by the magnificent self defense mechanism the moth had in its radiantly colored winglets that were spotted to represent eyes and scare off predators. I hope you enjoy the photos I got of it unfortunately only with my phone.
