Yep, that's right - chickens actually do make pretty good pets. Here's the pros and cons of owning chickens:
Pros:
• Their feathers are surprisingly soft.
• They provide entertainment.
• They will eat literally anything you feed them. So instead of making your trash can stinky with rotting bits of food you didn't want to eat, feed it to them!
• Most residential areas allow them as backyard animals. (But make sure to check your city/state laws before you get one).
• NEVER BUY EGGS AGAIN!!! That's right, you can have an (almost) unlimited supply of eggs! As long as you don't have a rooster, these feathery friends will provide fresh eggs for your consumption daily (just make sure to clean the eggs before you use them).
Cons:
• Some chickens are not extremely nice, so be careful not to get pecked by one of them.
• Stepping in fresh chicken droppings isn't pleasant. Make sure to wear shoes outside and wipe them off or even take them off completely before coming inside again.
• If you aren't a morning person and your bedroom is close to the backyard, you may find their morning bawking to be quite annoying. However, some people can sleep through almost anything so it might not be a major problem at all for them.
• Chickens don't seem to love young children. I've seen many get pecked for being overly friendly towards the chickens.
• Frequent hand washing after handling them gets to be a bit of a nuisance, especially in the winter when washing can cause extremely dry skin.
