Three males and a female Harlequin Duck fly along the Massachusetts coast over the Atlantic Ocean.
To get flight shots like this of fairly distant birds, I used my 600mm and 2x converter (thus 1200mm) and tracked and focused on the birds as they passed with my camera/lens on a tripod with gimbal type head. See behind-the-scenes shots in my last post. The gimbal head, like the new Gitzo model I am using, allows you to balance the lens and move quickly. As for finding the birds in the frame of at 1200mm lens and getting them in focus as they fly quickly past? Practice, Practice, Practice.
