For more than two thirds of human population, almost 5 billion people who live in the cities and other light dominated areas, this view of the Milky Way is gone, unless you travel far enough from the light pollution where the natural night environment is still preserved. On this autumn evening near the White Mountains in New England, the Galaxy was merging out of twilight with the passing clouds lit by yellow sodium streetlights of a nearby town.
