Truth or Dare? Magic or Not? AMAZING WILD FUNGUS entered my Life!

in photography •  7 years ago  (edited)

Last weekend I was pulled into the woods by a very nice young woman! WOW...

Mushroom hunt was on! Although I lived surrounded by woods in my childhood, and I love to eat mushrooms, I never learned about which mushrooms can be eaten and which cannot. I simply assume all the mushrooms sold in the shops - including the magic ones :) - can be eaten, and the others cannot.

We went for the 'eekhoorntjesbrood' mushroom and I had to Google the English translation for this one which turns out to be 'cep'. My friend was specialist in this type.

The first we found...

It got bag-ed!

The second or third we found...

...but left that one in the forest. Check out the little one! Covered and protected by its big parent.

Another perfect one! It looks perfect in shape but perfect to eat? By now I know it was a perfect one in all aspects...

Intermezzo...the forest we entered, and right at the 'entrance' many cep, as we found out later when we were heading back to the car...

After some checking with friends and family, my dear friend marked the entire catch of the day as GOOD to EAT! Only then I dared to taste one of these; Raw! I tried the stem first, it was ok. Then I tried the head...WOW...what an AMAZING INTENSE taste! Nothing comparable with anything in the grocery shops!

The next morning, my friend decided to re-arrange the mushrooms. I LOVE IT! My little nerd in me!

Eventually all the mushrooms got chopped, and a couple of hours later a traditional Russian cep soup with potatoes, carrots, onion, garlic and sour cream and dill to top it off, was on the table!

We got so many mushrooms, I've still some soup left. Lunch will be GREAT!

Questions

  1. Have you ever tried eating wild mushrooms?
  2. What other eatable mushrooms we can find in the wild?
  3. Would you consider hunting for wild mushrooms?

Definitely something we do intermittently to prepare for the winter and chances of food accessibility shortages. Typically we get shitake (sp) from a local who grows them. Wild mushrooms are difficult to find due to the lack of forests here but a few hours off there's plenty. Gotta know your shroooms or go with someone who does or it ends badly.

Knowledge is a must, or a taster like the kings in the dark ages.

ziet smakkelijk uit!
lekker???????
foraging heb ik nog nooit gedaan alleen paddenstoelen fotoshoot hahaha
ben bang om de giftige te eten
oi! ik moest lachen met de eerste zin :D
pulled by a woman in the woods? anders om toch? daz niet normaal man hihih

Nee! Dus Echt!

Heerlijke soep!

Hello, we in Russia go for mushrooms in trucks. Mushrooms are good. Find a directory of mushrooms and learn about new types of growing in your area of residence.

WOW! Those are BIG!

WOW !

That soup makes me hungry.

Writing the post did the same for me! :)

Very good post and a interesting read!

You could have a look at this website, it have a lot of different things listed that you can receive from nature without commercial interference :)

"Wildplukwijzer"
(translates to something like "Where to find things from nature that you can eat" :p )

WOW, this is a great website!

Upped and Resteemed! Nice post! Yummy! There are many eatable mushrooms in the woods, but I wouldn't eat all of them and first make sure they are eatable. But in the end even the fly agaric is eatable unless you can cope with the hallucinations. I heard the Russians eat them for breakfeast! :)

I should try them! :) Thanks for the advise.

Looks like you had a great hunt and a delicious bowel of soup. I have gone mushroom picking with others but we always took them to get them checked by an expert before eating them.

Yep, experts are required, and fortunately I had one with me! :)

That's a lot of mushrooms for a days hunting! They look lovely. I love them but cannot differentiate the bad and safe ones so I kind of buy from the store!

As a mater of fact, it took us not more than 2 hours with a break as well. My friend really knows where to go, and what to look for to find these cep. To be honest? I buy them in the shop as well, since even after this adventure, I would not trust myself to be able to distinct the good from the bad.

Must have been fun! All the best, will give it a try once I get back to the country side!

Wow, I wish I know how to identify mushrooms that can be eaten. I have encountered many kinds of mushrooms of different shapes and sizes but I had just left them where I found them. Mushrooms are really expensive in the supermarket. Can the mushroom be eaten raw? I wonder.

Can the mushroom be eaten raw?

I did, one, stem + head, about a week ago and still alive an kicking :)

How was the taste like? What kind of diet do you follow?
