This was the first time out with the new GoPro Hero 5 with higher resolution and an Image stabilizer function.

First let me say that this is a sweet little camera. I didn't spend much time with the manual (doesn't really come with one) so I'm not sure I had it set up perfectly. This was an out of the box kind of test.

The day had escaped me, and by the time I had a few bricks charged and ready, the sun was getting close to being gone for the day. I raced out to this lookout where I knew there would be minimal interference from people. I attached the new camera the same way I did it's predecessor, with a strap and a small wedge of foam for the correct shooting angle.

Though I didn't intend to test the camera's low-light capabilities, that's what it turned into. I had time for 5 packs in the same spot and you can really see the degradation of the footage as the evening progressed. The little camera did well though, and even handled the quick pans from the setting sun back to the darker land with what appears to be relative ease.

The latitude of the GoPro 5 is quite remarkable. This is not a scientific test. I'm sure that there is more technical knowledge out there somewhere, but just take it from me, a 20+ year veteran of shootin video... GoPro Hero 5 shoots good low light!

The image stabilizer is going to need some tweaking. There are a couple of shots where the quad spins 360 degrees and when the image lands on the level horizon, the camera appears to pan just a bit to the left, or the right, depending on the direction of your spin. There could be worse problems, but if I can't find a way to minimize that effect I don't see the point of using stabilization during flights.

I filmed this sequence in 60 frames per second and edited it that way too. When it came time to export, I did a basic color correct and changed the sequence frame rate to 24 frames per second... if you don't know why; I'll discuss in another blog post.

Loved it.
Nice effort @edwardseaton

thanks buddy!

glad you are diggin the new Gopro. The image stabilization is working wonders for me in the flippity flop videos. I don't have a keen enough eye to catch the finer details. My videos were very sketchy until I switched to the 5. I think it rounds off the hard edges when there is tons of back and fourth. Your flying is already smooth without the stabilization. It may not give you as much mileage.

I think there might be a way to dial down the stabilization a wee bit. Working on it ;)

Thanks for watching!

Looks fantastic!
Hey I want to buy a drone too.
What do you thing about the dji mavic pro?
Would you buy the gopro again?

Depends on what kind of flying you want to do. If you want to just get up high and look around, the Mavic or the Spark are excellent choices, but if you really want to zoom around, you have to build a racing drone. I tell everyone to check out the Rotor Riot channel on youtube. That's where I learned how to build mine :) Good luck! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCemG3VoNCmjP8ucHR2YY7hw
