The Day After the Winter Solstice

Yesterday was the darkest day of the year, it will only get lighter from here on out, thank fucking god!

We only got about four and a half hours of daylight. The sun hardly even climbs above the tree line and as soon as it does, right back down it goes. There is only a very brief window for shooting outside, and when that window opened, I ran out still in my PJ's, a down jacket and the first booties that were somewhat my size. I have major FOMO regarding great photography conditions, especially when I'm in the countryside, so when I see something good, I run out immediately. So I walked down to the lake, through snow that was almost up to my knees, snapped a couple pictures and quickly ran back inside for a cup of tea.

It was snowing all morning, like you can see from the first two pictures, soon there is enough to go sledding!

Hello. Great. I love it.

Hello. Great. I love it.

Nature always wears the colors of the spirit.

You live in such a gorgeous place.
Thanks to all the landscape pics on Steemit I have about a thousand new places I must visit! Finland has always been high on the list though, mostly because of the sauna culture (I loooove a good sauna), but now thanks to you it's on the list because of the scenery too. :)

Haha, I’m right there with you on this one, so many places I want to visit!

Beautiful photos... make me feel slightly nostalgic. The last few days of school before Christmas break, it would be dark when we got on the bus in the morning, and dark when we got off in the afternoon. Not as far north now, but the days are still short and murky...

There IS something slightly magical about days where it is snowing and suddenly the sun pokes through; illuminating the world before the wind has blown the loose snow off branches and twigs. Of course, I can't actually LOOK at it-- I have sensitive eyes so they start watering from the brightness, almost immediately. Life...

Anyway, thanks for sharing your lovely surroundings!

It does make you appreciate the light so much more after the dark days.

Oh those bright January days where the sun reflects from the snow, so beautiful and so blinding! I pretty much have to take pictures with my eyes closed and go inside to see what it actually looked liked outside.

I am always so happy and grateful for the solstice to arrive. I miss longer days, it always feels like you are running out of day in the winter. It is very beautiful where you live, the cold drapes everything like a frozen shawl.

Definitely, you feel like you have to get everything done in just a couple of hours or the day is done. Can't wait for when it's both cold AND sunny :)

I love those days too, everything shines like the light is being fractured by hundreds of crystals. Cold sunny days are the brightest. Hope you have a great Christmas.

I do have to say that my eyes hate it when the sun reflects from the snow, it's a waterfall every time :'D Have a wonderful Christmas too :)

Very cool photos! I mean literally cool photos. Haha. Being in a tropical country, experiencing white Christmas would be magical! However, having extreme cold weather is not nice, right? lol

It’s not even that cold yet, waiting for the temperature to drop to -30 Celsius, with a clear sky and a possibility of northern lights, THAT is truly magical.

You're very dedicated to go shooting outside in the winter in only PJs!

I am happy that our days will be getting longer now too. You only get 4 and 1/2 hours of sunlight!? I wouldn't make it lol...

Also, you live in a beautiful area if that is walking distance from you. Lucky!

It is hard, but there are these glimpses of light that make it kind of worth it.

Sadly I don't live here anymore, but this is my homehome aka birth home.

Beautiful the views are amazing

Let the longer days bring light, let them bring light at the end of the dark crypto tunnel

I can see the light!

The Winter Solstice is not the first day of Winter, it is the Middle of Winter hence the name.

Winter runs from November to January, it matters not what the Government dictates. Like much of the Governments pronouncements.

Your point being?

Love these winter pictures! They are so pretty! Yay for more sunlight in the future :)

I don't know are u gonna see my reply but i must say that u are really good in this...great post's and very good pictures ! I'm so happy cuz of u..Keep it up !

Neat... Reminds me of Christmas in OHIO..

Yes, we passed winter solstice and now with big steps coming closer to summer time. The images deliver such a peaceful and quiet atmosphere. I love it when it's all snowy outside, the snow reflecting the sun and most of the time it's really quite because the snow absorbs the noises.
Hope you have a great christmas with your family!

2 minutes every day.. that's 1 hour in a month ! by the end of Jan on a clear sky day, you can almost smell the spring as it stays light until 5pm (UK)

Beautiful memories of this short day are here! I love it and happy that now days become longer and longer!
What lens are you used for those shots?

Here in the southern hemisphere, we just had the Summer Solstice.....

I wrote a post about - would you like to read it? Let me know and I'll share the link with you.

I feel the same way about Winter Solstice.... although to be fair, where I live in Melbourne (Australia), the solstice is really just the beginning of our winter. the coldest and greyest time is July-August (and even September if the winter is particularly strong). So I'm usually more celebrating the Equinox, as it means we start to actually warm up just a little.

Such beautiful country. A shame you only get four hours to see it!

oh wow! wonderful pictures! the last photo look very lonely though.

Well it looks like its gonna be a White Christmas for you!

Definitely :)

Well worth the effort; cracking shots! Wow to go sledging amazing its been years. Theres and amazing hill near me just need the snow :)

I like winter :) But sometimes I want summer :)

Hello. It is cool. Thanks for your sharing.

Nice that the solstice has passed!

I can give you a tip which is just wait for the long summer days to take beautiful pictures in presence of sunlight.... Really nice pictures and hats off to those oak trees dealing with that cold snowy weather like a BOSS... :)

Nice one, thank God for the light. I wonder how it will be without light

It’s black without the light.
