Scenic Ceilings - The Royal Bank of Scotland dome ..and a crypto mini-rant

My local bank is fancy. You walk in past columns, marble flooring in a entry hall with a security guard that wears a long coat, cane and top-hat.. into the main chamber where this is what the ceiling looks like.

Here it is in full context. This used to just be one long counter around the whole room with about 15 staff on at any time, but now its only 2 staff with a little counter at the back right of the room.

The bank was founded in 1727 and is Scotland's largest bank (that's right, my bank is 49 years older than the USA!). It is also one of the world's largest banks and due to events in the past 10 years (sub-prime mortgage lending etc) one of the more dysfunctional. Its like that crazy old relative that has been alive forever who you are both proud of and embarrassed by.

And now of course we have the rise of cryptocurrency, which British banks are refusing to acknowledge the existence of. You cannot get these guys to keep up with the times if you tried. There's a new totally online bank showing up in the UK called Monzo. I've very excited by them. I asked if they will support crypto and they replied basically saying 'one step at a time.' They neither confirmed nor denied, but I'm optimistic. Crytpo in the UK has been a real problem, with banks sometimes freezing the accounts of people who trade in crypto.

They really seem to hate and distrust crypto and don't want to adopt it. Personally I think that will be their downfall. I bought some Scotcoin today which seems to be a scottish cryptocurrency for a laugh. Lets see what happens with that. The old banks think they are safe. The have a monopoly position on things like lending and mortgages.. but how long do you think it will be before we get online banks that offer mortgages in crypto? Or provide other classic banking services in crypto? What do you guys think? Are the banks shooting themselves in the foot? Will their unwillingness to adapt their business model (like music stores did with mp3s) be their undoing? I think so. Not immediately.. but in time.

But until then.. ooh pretty ceiling!

I should say that Architects back in the day used to have really good imagination. Not like today's architecture.

They certainly did. They just don't have that artistic flair anymore :)

I wonder, when was the last time modern architect have built anything close to this? Excluding Las Vegas of course :)))

Good question, there are lots of unique and interesting building that were built recently but they don't have the same charm. They're pretty but often a bit sterile.

That's what i miss. One or two glass building would be nice. But glass cities...

oh definitely. That is why London is so interesting i think. Its a good mix of old and new.

Nice post. Bank lobbies aren't what they used to be. Primarily because no one uses them anymore.

This is so true. A lot of bank staff are getting laid off here because no one goes into the bank anymore.

Wow, this has got to be the nicest bank I had ever seen -- haha!

lol thanks! Yeah they don't make 'em like that anymore :) they just renovated it too.. it used to look old and tired with peeling paint on the walls and the blue in the skylight fading.. Thanks for stopping by and commenting :)
