Interesting Places in Austria – Zentralfriedhof

in photography •  7 years ago

The „Zentralfriedhof“ in Vienna with more than 330.000 graves one of the biggest cemeteries in Europe. It is based in Simmering and it is really worth a visit. Among popular grave’s like the grave from “Ludwig van Beethoven”, “Franz Schubert”, “Johann Strauss” or Falco civil name Johann (Hans) Hölzel there are many interesting graves to visit there. For me as a wildlife photographer, the jewish part of the Zentralfriedhof is very interesting because trees and plants can grow there as they like, and nature has the “Power” over this part of the Cementary.

Wildlife Photographers dream

You can find a lot of wildlife at the Jewish part of the cementary like deer, badgers, the European Kestrel or the European hamster living here. Because the Cementary is very big and a lot of places are roughly visited by people, wildlife and animal could develop very good and because there is still some human around every time the animal there might not be so shy then somewhere else in pure nature.

I still need to find the European Kestrel and take a picture of it, but this is not always that easy. But because it is a nice place I will visit it next year again very often. Now in autumn and winter there can be very nice foggy weather where the graves, especially the old ones look marvelous.

Birds like the (Eurasian) jay can also be found on the „Zentralfriedhof“. But you need a very long telezoom lens like my 150-600mm lens, to get close enough for some nice pictures as the animals are still shy. Picture: Florian Glechner

Of course you can also find a lot of small animals like Butterflies here. Picture: Florian Glechner.
