Deep in the Garden (Original Photography)

Howdy!

It's been a beautiful day here, for a Monday, with the sun shining, low humidity, and flowers blooming everywhere! So, what better for "Macro Monday" then some close-ups from the garden.

Stamen and Flowers
I purchased a true macro lense (1:1 capable) a few years ago from a seller on Craigslist. I met him in a dodgy coffee shop in a not-too-sketchy part of the Twin Cities (Minneapolis & St. Paul, MN), where we made a cash transaction. For awhile, it was the sharpest lens I owned and, for the price I paid, it was a great investment.

More Flower Tenticles (Stamen)
Macro lenses let you focus in very close. With an APS-C sensor, a macro lens can get close enough to fill the frame with a penny, more or less. They're a little tricky to use, because the depth of field (ammout in focus) is really small. If you breathe while pressing the shutter, it can result in a blurry mess. Canon makes an L-series version of my 100mm macro that has stabilization, but it's double the price. Nobody seems to sell them on Craigslist, either.

Hungry Little Pest
The botanically inclined know that gardens are more than just flowers and bunnies. Especially since bunnies eat flowers and are usually chased out. This photo is of another little pest, but I don't know what type of insect it is. They were happily munching on flower leaves. This one appears to have dozed off in a comfortable spot... Do bugs sleep?

Marigold +1
This marigold has a visitor, too. Fortunately, the ants don't seem to shred leaves or decapitate flowers.

As for macros, they're not only useful in the garden. Being able to get close to objects presents some interesting photo potential. This next photo is of an old-fashioned jelly jar.

Jelly jar incredible pic :)

Thanks!

These are wonderful shots. And I like that you give a bit of technical commentary.

That bug isn't sleeping. It's dead. How do I know? I see dead bugs and they tell me. True story. :)

The jam jar reminds me of the old leaded glass on my grandmother's front door and windows. I like it a lot.

I took some floral photos today too - but haven't posted them yet.....we too had a beautiful and cool low humidity day. Lots of wind so it was tricky with the flowers.

Also, the shadow from the stamen in the first shot is really great!

Thanks! The jam jar might be from the same era as your grandmother's door. It's cut glass, although it's probably not leaded. At least I hope it wasn't, with the whole heat processing of jams!

As to the bug... he's definitely dead now! That one actually jump/flew shortly after I took the photo, but my mother decided to end their little lives with a preemptive strike.

I'll look forward to seeing your flower photos, then! They are, indeed, hard to get focused, when they're bending all over the place in the breeze! I hope you didn't get the late-evening heat wave and storm system.

noooooooo.....no more heat pleeeeez. I just checked the weather network....we have a cool couple of days - it's 57F right now. Low 70's for the rest of the week. Whew. And you are further north than us.

I saw the storm system but it flows south and below the lakes so we aren't getting one. I don't mind those, I just hate the humidity.

The humidity is the rough part, for sure. When I lived in Spain, it was hot and dry. The summers get absurdly hot, but at least it's dry. The storm front finally moved through and the temperatures are dropping again. Tomorrow's supposed to be beautiful!

Love the mental picture of the dodgy coffee shop. I'm glad you bought the macro lens (great photos) and I love the tutorial too :)

Thanks! I didn't even wind up in an ally minus a kidney :-) It was my cheapest lens, by far, and still a fun and handy one to have around.

Lol, I’m glad you still have your kidneys. Now I’m going to think of that every time I use Craig’s list. Too funny!
