Foto diatas memperlihatkan para pemburu gajah Sumatera sedang berpose selepas berburu di hutan bersama hasil buruannya. Foto yang diambil pada sekitar tahun 1880-1900 ini menunjukkan bahwa praktik perburuan gajah Sumatera sudah berlangsung sejak lama, biasanya untuk diambil gadingnya.
Sampai saat ini praktik tersebut masih berlangsung dan mengancam keberadaan gajah Sumatera. Populasinya saat ini terus menurun karena habitatnya terdesak oleh perkebunan dan perkampungan manusia, selain itu juga karena perburuan ilegal.
