Walk With Me In The Sand Quarry

in photography •  6 years ago

Let's go back to the summer for the moment. I found out that I never posted anything about my visit to the sand quarry I did in July last year. I had wanted to go there a couple of years but never did for some reason, until this time. Called up a friend to join me on the exploration and off we went. This quarry is not abandoned, gathering sand is very much active there today but all that's been left of the mining are these huge holes, which go full of water instantly because of groundwater in the area.
There are many lakes in the area where I have been often but this time I wanted to see this other area where the road goes through the lake, water being on both sides of the road.

Weather on that evening was exceptionally hot, we also thought about going swimming but the water was oddly enough freezing cold, even in mid-July. Also, this place was hugely populated by mosquitoes but they just flew over our heads and didn't bother to suck us dry from the blood.

I saw these sand mountains and climbed on to them. Even though there were signs all over the place that this is prohibited, I took my chances. I wanted to get a better areal view of the place.

We sat around a little bit, enjoyed the nature and soon sun went down and it started to get darker, at that point, we started to walk back. Overall I loved the place and looking forward to going back there again in the summer to hike( or maybe even winter )

lol - signs are over-rated!

Such a shame you can't swim. I'm a swimmer and those lakes look so inviting. You caught great color and the tree shot in 4th place is spectacular!

I would love to visit this place., and I'm glad the bugs did not get you.

So are they still mining when the water has risen? I read somewhere we have a "sand shortage" for cement production. These guys might be making bank!

If you ever visit Estonia, you can check this place out yes!

I saw the site where active mining is going on. They mine it basically in the water, somehow pump it out and then dry it.

Wow - that's crazy. Sneak some photos of that next time. I did not look and thought this was in the US somewhere! i love STEEM for all it shows me :)

Yea, will do!

very vivid colors and great mirror effect with the water completely still, a very relaxing walk into nature

Yes, it totally was. Basucally zero wind speed provided these calm conditions and mirror looking water.

These seems to be very friendly mosquitoes :) Good for you!

I can imagine that this place is beautiful in winter too, so you should go there now as well :)

Is water deep there? I wonder why it was cold.. could it be because it's very deep so it didn't have time to warm up? Just thinking ...

Your photos are beautiful as always. You showcase this place in your typical way :) I really like that..

Thank you for sharing!

Yeah, maybe these mosquitoes are not the typical ones, not sure :D
Im not sure about the water coldness as well. Maybe because previous nights were pretty cold.

Yes, water is deep there. Abut 10-15c meters. After 4-5 steps in the water its above your head.

Oh and thanx! :)

I'm sure they would make a feast of you if you would stay there overnight :) They would not pass the opportunity to suck blood :D

So I would not swim there.. I'm not a big fan of deep waters..

My pleasure :)

Lol yeah :D

We have another quarry that is 120 meters deep in the middle :D

It was a very nice walk 👍🏻
