This male gelada monkey shakes off his mane as shadows fall on the Great Rift Valley below. A primate unique to the Ethiopian Highlands, with one of the strangest diets (mostly grass!) and colorations (red chest patch and large mane) of any monkey. Ethiopia has made the news in recent weeks for political reasons, but for geladas life in the highlands goes on as usual - for now. As with many photos taken #OnAssignment, this one didn’t make the cut for the magazine.
