Every photography fan should know Saul Leiter. If you don't, you will thank me after reading this.

Saul Leiter is my favorite photographer. If think he deserves to be more widely known. This is a tribute.

Leiter is born in America of the 20s in a jewish family. At 23, he dropped his religious study to become one of the most influent art photographer. Leiter has a gift to transmit emotion through his photographies. He is a poet who work with image.

The words of Martin Harrison perfectly described Leiter's work: "Leiter’s sensibility . . . placed him outside the visceral confrontations with urban anxiety associated with photographers such as Robert Frank or William Klein. Instead, for him the camera provided an alternate way of seeing, of framing events and interpreting reality. He sought out moments of quiet humanity in the Manhattan maelstrom, forging a unique urban pastoral from the most unlikely of circumstances."

Although very well at ease with black and white, the emergence of colour photography will take leiter into another dimension.
