Today I visited the Airport Berlin Tempelhof which ceased operations in 2008 but has a unique history.
The following pictures shall show how to utilize a closed airport for the benefit of the citizens of Berlin.

A short overview of the “Airlift” history from 1948/1949 when the Russians closed all access points to West Berlin and the US Airforce flew in supplies via air cargo.
This gives you an imagination of the huge size of this airport.

Due to the sheer size, they placed a container village for refugees right in the middle of the airport field
Refugee Camp - it was a bit sad to see the caged little kids playing- but now they are safe here in Berlin
This is a huge area, empty space, very little utilized currently

BBQ areas - totally crowded during weekends, a awesome atmosphere then
A community garden with all kinds of plants, self grown vegetables and other nice plants, a nice area to sit and relax

This airport has a unique history.
Btw, this airport was featured in Part 3 of Indiana Jones when they had to flee from Berlin with a Zeppelin (google it )
