Photography Exercises and Useful Settings.

In my the second photography lesson we discussed photometry and exposure. Basically, it is the way camera measures light and let it enter into the sensors.

In photography, exposure is the amount of light per unit area (the image plane illuminance times the >exposure time) reaching a photographic film or electronic image sensor, as determined by shutter speed, >lens aperture and scene luminance.
Wikipedia

In Nikon D3400 you can adjust exposure in your camera by pressing the button shown. You keep pressing the button and you adjust accordingly.

In the next exercises you will why this is so important.

Exercise 1

You cameras are built to show a certain average color tone. This is all good when we shoot something with many and different colors, but what about when you have a dominant white or black object ?

You get a shitty grey image like this one.

But don't throw away your camera, yet. Just , play with exposure. If you have a white abject increase exposure and if you have a black decrease it.

Now here's how my towel and jacket look like with more or less exposure.

Obviously, there is no set rule on much you should adjust. You will have to experiment and try different settings.

Exercise 2

In some cases your object has a lot of light behind it. For example it is sitting in window. Average photographers will shoot a dark photo. Not us !!! We will compensate exposure and get an at least decent photo.

Exercise 3

Bracketing is the process of taking three photos; one using the camera's recommended >settings, one intentionally underexposed, and one intentionally overexposed. The reason is >simply to be sure you can get a good exposure from a subject that's hard to meter.
Digital Photography Workbook For Dummies® By Doug Sahlin.

The definition is self explanatory for the exercise . Three shots , three exposures

Exercise 4

Now we will experiment with ISO. ISO is the light sensitivity of the sensor of the camera. With higher ISO, more noise starts to appear in the photos.

Settings

Modern cameras have a lot of points of focus. This works well in auto mode but when you want to shoot something specific your camera may choose the wrong point of focus. So, it is advisable and our teacher made us change to single point of focus. In Nikon D3400 you press i , AF-area mode , single point AF.

Setup

As I said you have to experiment to find the perfect shot. Many times, your camera's screen may not show an accurate picture. So, I have downloaded Nikon's app SnapBridge and paired it with my phone and iPad so that I can immediately see the result of my photos on a much bigger screen.

That's it for tonight.

Hopefully I will come back with more pictures and some Lightroom experiments.

And until we all shoot the perfect shot…

You tell very clearly and meaningfully. You are always honest and frank. Thank you.

Thank you for your kinds words and the resteems . :)

Thanks for the "lesson"!! I have been experimenting myself today,
we had a walk in the countryside and I took like tons of pictures trying to figure what each change in the settings would would do (my friends almost killed themselves from boredom).

I'm looking forward for the next part!! :D

Tomorrow is the third and last lesson. I am looking forward to it. Don't know if we will have exercises, but if there is anything I can share, I will. And I forgot to mention always to shoot on both RAW and Jpeg , because RAW files are easily edited.

I'll be waiting!!
I also watched this video, recommended by another greek steemian, it's mostly a "button" guide, but it has been helpful. :)

@otsouvalas suggested this channel and it's great.

Oh, thanks! I'll check it out!

No more exercises for this class, since it is over, but I am enrolling in video, adobe premier and lightroom classes... :)

Lucky you, I don't know if there are at least any photography groups in my area...

Enjoy your classes as much as you can! :)

Thank you. Hopefully, you will enjoy the end result. :)

Wow, you're making great progress! I've always gotten so confused with all the settings on my Nikon (it's a D3200), but did learn enough a couple years ago to do some average food photography. I have a few posted here on Steemit, but if you want to see my past work head over to http://coolcathotfood.com

I can't wait to see your progress as your education continues!

When you have someone to tell you exactly what to do , it speeds up the process. Rather than spending hours on youtube to get stearted, I spent on the lessons and it was money well spent. Now I can easily see youbute since I know some basics.
And cool blog by the way.

I didn't even go the YT route. Just used the manual that came with the camera and experimented.

I wish I had time and money to restart that blog. It was quite rewarding to post those finished recipes/photos, but it's SO time consuming.

maybe you will do it when you grow up @moneyinfant :)

Maybe I'll do it if my wife gets the urge to revive the blog. She was a great help the first time around :)

I like your lessons for their details. Sometimes it seems a bit extra but every time I found something new. thank you!

Learning is a neverending process. Thank for dropping by.

This is good info. Thank you!

So many options for everything, it looks a little complicated!

Not a little. :)
Now I appreciate photographers more.

Haha we agree on that!

This post just makes me want to get a camera and start photography.

Why don't you do it ? :)

Well, good cameras are very very expensive in where I am

Ok , fair enough.

Nice read Ilias, you are moving fast on photography! I especially liked the EV compensation example at Panathinaiko Stadium. You can really make an HDR photo from that shots!

Thank you I am giving my best.

Πολύ ενδιαφέροντα και χρήσιμα!!!

Νασαι καλα , ευχαριστω . :)
