We were having dinner at the seaside which the restaurant had its' opening last week. Suddenly, we saw this crab going towards our table. We had a 7 year old with us so it was a bit of a fascination for both the young and the oldies with him, all getting all their cameras for photo shoots.
A hermit crab lives in a shell, though not necessarily its' own originally, it was picked up along the way and its' sizes also differs according to the crab size. I found a fascinating video from youtube regarding this.
As the waiter picked it up, the crab fell off from the shell and kept running away from it, in contrast to that in the video wherein the crabs were fighting each other in getting its' own shell and going inside it.
It took sometime before it was totally inside the shell but it did in the end...after putting it and the shell inside a styro-foam.
So cute. The little blighters was lucky not to be eaten by birds!

Probably one of the reasons they need their shells ;) they hide under the sand and stony parts of the shore. Without their shells, they need protection from the sun.

Hermit crabs are soft bodied creatures that are totally dependent on shells for protection. The crab continually grows forcing it to move to a larger shell, hence the term hermit crab. Quite often we have people coming into our store looking for larger shells for their pet hermit crabs.
