Lately I've been watching Gold Rush: Alaska. Season 6 is on here in Finland three times a day and new episode every weekday. Normally I don't watch reality TV at all because I don't like it, but there was something about this one. I got stuck and now I can't stop although it's becoming predictable and the episodes start to be too similar.
I don't like to watch fights between people and I don't like drama queens. I usually have little interest of who is dating who or who said something to someone. When thinking about movies and TV-series, I like action, weird stuff, science fiction, history and documentary. Now if the writer is a genius and can wisely add romance or drama on top of that (except documentary), I'll take it. Excellent scripts are always better with personal stuff added, but TV-series that are solely based on peoples relations is not my favorite. Not any more, that is because yes, I did watch Friends and liked it.
But of course there are exceptions. British (historical) drama. Downton Abbey, The Tudors, Mr Selfridge, Parade's End. You name it, I'll watch it!
But as I said, I don't like reality TV. I don't like the repetition in most reality series. "Now let's recap what's happened..." " I remember what's happened, it just happened 15 seconds ago and don't you (director, editor, who ever) dare prolong this and add extra gazes and facial expressions that weren't there, oh and now you did it!" In Gold Rush the season might now be over before it began because something happened or didn't happen, the narrator tells for the hundredth time how much Parker Schnabel is set to earn this season, how much the dredge of Tony Beets has to dig gold to pay itself back and how Todd Hoffman has earned tens of times more than last season in the rainforest.
So I don't know why I still watch it. Maybe it's because of the new words I learn. For some time, few episodes, I wondered about the fact how someone could dig bedrock with an excavator. Shouldn't there be explosives involved to mine bedrock? But after a while I realized that bedrock is rocks as solid bedrock is solid. When bedrock is translated to Finnish, it's peruskallio or kallioperä (rock foundation). And solid bedrock is also peruskallio. So in Finland peruskallio is always solid.
I definitely still think there should be some explosives involved now that the original MythBusters is over.
Maybe one day I'll stop watching it. But not today. I have to know how much nuggets are found and paydirt sluiced this week with the dredge, Big Red and Goldzilla.
