Steemit Photo Challenge #2 - Theme Announcement!

in photography •  8 years ago

Step right up, step right up!

The first Steemit Photo Challenge was a hit. I couldn’t have asked for a better turn out! We had some amazing photos submitted by very talented photographers. I hope that everyone went and followed their work!

Initially I’d wanted to do a new challenge once every two weeks, but I thought that so many things happen in two weeks on Steemit that it feels like an eternity! So instead, I’ve chosen once a week. If this is too often, just let me know! We’ll see what the turn out for this one will be.

We’ve got some guest panelists for this Steemit Photo Challenge so that it’s not just my tastes driving this thing!

The panel for this contest will be: @condra, @begstreets, @pfunk, and myself.

We will choose our picks for the top FIVE entries, Honourable Mentions and the new prize for People’s Choice!

The prizes for this contest will be determined by the rewards of this post.

I kept the SBD from the last Winner's post to put towards this round, plus whatever comes in now.
So please upvote if you want to keep this thing going. It’s up to you, the community!

I'd like to match the prizes from SPC#1, if we can!

Now, with all that business out of the way!

The Theme for the Second Steemit Photo Challenge will be:

Shadows

Style: Black & White

I’m looking for high contrast images featuring shadows. Any subject would be fine.
Pay attention to composition, though!

A few examples of some shadowy high contrast photographs can be found at these links:

You get the idea.

The Rules And Conditions have been updated.

Please read these carefully and adhere to them

UPDATES:

  • No more than 3 entries will be considered, if you post more than 3 then only the first 3 will be considered.

  • A “People’s Choice” will be selected by number of votes (not by value), so make sure you vote for your favourites!

  • Deadline for entry is midnight my time (GMT -4) on Sunday

  • All entries must be tagged both #photography and #steemitphotochallenge

  • The Title should contain "SteemitPhotoChallenge Entry" along with the title of your work.

  • Let us know the medium used to produce the photograph, it may be more impressive based on what it is.

  • Basic processing is allowed.

  • Any medium or format is allowed — iphone, ipad, film, digital, point and shoot, drone, whatever. Once it takes a picture. Note that image quality will be considered.

  • Multiple Entries can all go in one post, just put the details under the image.

  • I strongly encourage you to post work that is original to this challenge, in other words — take a new photograph instead of using an old one.

  • If you would like, use the #SteemitPhotoChallenge tag across social media like Twitter, FB and Instagram. It may drive more users to the platform.

  • Any attempt to steal others' work is considered a serious infraction by the community, so don't do it. Please don't waste your and our time by posting some image from the net.

  • Every effort will be made to ensure that we do not reward theft. All images will be reverse checked, if the image has been found on more than 2 “major” websites, it will be disqualified unless reasonable proof can be shown to prove ownership of the original. If there is any doubt whatsoever about the ownership of the photograph, I reserve the right to disqualify the image. It is in your interest to provide any proof necessary. I would appreciate any help from the community in finding plagiarism where I might have missed it.

  • The photographs will be judged on how well they met the challenge, the quality of the image, the composition, lighting, exposure, and the general aesthetics which means that yes, it is subjective.

  • The decision of the panel will be final.

The winners will be announced in a new post after a few days, the rewards of that post will help fund the next round of winners for Steemit Photo Challenge #3.

Happy Snapping!

Sort Order:

Black and white only? Cause the example url.. has color images too...

Yep! Black and white only. So everyone just ignore the colour :) Imagine black and white.

Lets do this :)
Check my entry :)

I love b&w. Will dig my pics to enter :)

Oh man I didn't know, welp, guess it's too late

Oh by the way... Real pictures should contain the exif metadata file.. stored in the raw files...

Not if it is film or another non-digital format. Also there may not be good metadata on an image shot with a digital camera that using a manual focus lens, especially a legacy lens attached with an adapter.

correct... i was thinking only with my gear...

Great; I will be looking for some shadows this weekend :)

No, a challenge every week is not too often.

Good luck to all who will take up the challenge. Happy shadow hunting.

Good luck everyone!

Thanks for this another wonderful photochallenge @jamtaylor . You're making the community grow in a more different way. For sure, this will be a big hit too and it would attract newcomers by participating..Cheers!

So dope! I am in. One question folks, technically every single (99.9999%) photo has shadows. I am seeing some entries that in my estimation do not feature a "macro" or "larger" sort of shadow. I am I to understand that the sky is the limit or would it be better to really feature shadowing in such a why that a casual observer would perceive it as a photo with shadows?

Good question and observation. I want to see shadows featured heavily in such a way that the casual observer would notice them. Most of the entries here show images that are composed in such a way that the shadows are a main feature of the composition [not the header image]. Thanks!

O.k., I'm in!

A shadow contest hey!?! Alright, last summer as I was chasing rainbows near Jasper Village, in the National Park, a series of rain clouds came by during the sunset. The sun casted the shadows of the mountains on the rain while the upper part of these continuously morphing shadows were shinning with a rainbow hue!!! With a bit of imagination, you will even notice an eagle that had formed in the shadow of the mountain, just left of the center point... ;)
I hope you all enjoy! Namaste :)

Here's my photo:

That music video is a masterpiece! :)

Aaaaand i submitted too...hope i did good.

How do you get the https link from Flickr? When I try to get a URL I only manage to get a http link :(

Hmm you click the share then choose the BB Code.

It's still giving me a http link which doesn't work on steemit. Anyhow, it's not a big deal. Thanks!

Awesome, I love chiaroscuro photography! Look forward to checking out the entries.

Chiaroscuro! That's the word I was looking for :)

A pretty cool word too. :)

Im gonna win this one no matter what spirit up high yihaa !

"I kept the SBD from the last Winner's post to put towards this round, plus whatever comes in now."

@jamtaylor Not sure if this is a mis-type but I think it should be the combined SPD from all of the photo challenges announcement posts in order to really create a large prize pool.

Pretty much all of it went towards prizes for the winners, and I kept the rewards from the winner post to go towards this one, it's not enough to match SPC#1 prizes though. Something like 400 STEEM (not Steem dollars) was given away last time, some of which had been donated, 200 of it came from the rewards of the first two posts.. I think it was like 650 SBD at the time.. This time I have 267 sbd (+50 donated) put aside which is what, maybe 100 STEEM?

We will work with what we get :) I might have to do much smaller prizes, we will see! Still have some time.

Aww ok wasn't sure. yep... well like anything, if people like it, it will grow <3 Ty for putting it on!

p.s. bigger now... @berniesanders came by and blessed it up again! :P

He is now our official sponsor :)

With his support we can give much better prizes and have better exposure!

Great idea, but how do I submit my photos? I know its a silly question for all of you technically so blessed but I‘m not ! Thank you!!!

Hey, you go to Submit a Story, include int he title Steemit Photo Challenge Entry, upload your pictures to imgsafe.org, copy the url of the image, paste it into the box here, tell us a little bit about the image, include: photography steemitphotochallenge as the tags, submit, and you're good to go.

Could someone explain how to post a photo in a comment? It will be easier to upvote comments here than to have to check out individual posts. Thanks in advance.

It's preferred for each to have their own post, but you can do it the same way you do it in a post, just paste the image URL and the image will show up.

Thanks. I'll probably do it both ways if I enter the contest.

idk =P

Good luck to all

@jamtaylor !
So sorry I didn't get back to you in time. I'll hit you up this next week about next week's theme. Been incredibly busy and still unable to get steemit.chat to work for me.

Great idea and a great way to bring steemians together. Everyone loves competitions, i hope this is the start of many more to come:)

I hope so too!

Ah! I missed this post yesterday! Where's my camera!?

One more comment...would it be interesting if all the entries were shown in this comment thread, not just the links but the actual photos? Just askin..

https://steemit.com/photography/@samether/steemitphotochallenge-entry-shadows-under-the-street-light

If you want but I'm not sure if it would be helpful to anyone, just take up space. I won't be checking here for the entries personally. I just check the tag

Awesome! Exited for this one!

Great theme, thank you for this great opportunity.

can black and white include sepia? or a monachrome tone?

Black and white only :)

Great choice for this week! Fun challenge...must find a shadow :)

Done . In this stile

You can find my entries in this post.

Loving the challenges!! Will be getting my submission together!

Good luck to all the participants.

Thank you for all the hard work you put into these! I appreciate the opportunity to show off my work and see everyone's entries!
Renée

My third entry is misbehaving! I'm having a devil of a time getting it to show the entire image in the post!

https://steemit.com/steemitphotochallenge/@reneenouveau/steemitphotochallenge-entry-2-shadows-3of3

ok lets try this one (just posted it actually in here https://steemit.com/photography/@djm34/djm34-some-more-photos) but there isn't much shadow (will have to go through my library otherwise):

any news @jamtaylor ?

I think I'll take a shot at this! My new album is called Shadows, perhaps I could get some nice booklet content.

I am new to steemit and not a professional photographer but would like to enter. I have one question though, does the image have to be black and white?

Hi there, this weeks challenge is over, you can see the winners if you look at my posts. Look out for the next challenge on Friday!

Shadows everywhere. Main thing is to see them

Absolutely

Well true :S

Id have had few more with other motive but I gtg in an hour and wont be back before tomorrow.
