On this day in 2014, about 4 inches of snow fell in Atlanta Ga,
the above image was taken by me, that's my car (at the time)
in front of the house where I lived (at the time)
This part of the US seldom sees snow, more than a dusting.
This event Began on a Friday around noon.
The city dismissed all their employees
The Schools all closed AT THE SAME TIME which of
course meant That ALL the interstates were jam packed.
Pay no attention to the man behind the...no; that's not right. Pay no attention to the dates on the pics. I hadn't bothered to set the dates in the camera.
It began as a dusting, the roads were warm enough to melt the first
Fall, but that meant disaster, as it rapidly froze to ICE.
People dayown heya don' kno nuttin about dwibin in no snow
from my post that day
It started snowing in Marietta while I was in the Dr's ofc. He pointed it out thru the window, which at first glance looked like a light blowing fog. There was little build up when we came out, and the roads between old downtown Marietta and the Nursing home (about 4 mi) were dark and wet.
I "caused" one near miss just as I was leaving the NH; someone apparently got startled by me pulling up to stop, and look before turning onto SandTown. They must have jerked their wheel of something, but whatever, they spun out right in front of me. Luckily, no one was coming and they didn't leave the road or hit anything. I only skidded a twice when I put on breaks, and that for only a second.
So I'm posting all this in "you know where" and people are commenting
about how they'd been in one spot for 3 hrs, others about moving at a
Snail's pace.
Keep in mind, these images are from the SUBURBS, with little traffic.
My niece and her husband (who is a quadriplegic) had been to a Dr.
Appointment IN THE CITY, when all this began. They spent the night
In their VAN (handicapped van) with the engine running.
Jerry do you know the condition of the hill on Buckner between Whitefield and home? Don't know if we can make it up it. Might be slick. We have only moved a half mile in an hour.
Jerry E Smith(in reply to the above) It was fine, (not frozen; blowing snow) when I came in, but that was over an hour ago. I almost chose to take oakdale to Vet mem to avoid all of that so I wouldn't chance it. Perhaps you should as well.
Are you on the interstate somewhere? >:(
She never replied to that.
Turned out they made it to within one mile of our house, but couldn't make it up the slick, curving roads to our neighborhood, so they spent the night in the Walgreens parking lot.
The next morning there were people from the area with 4WD vehicles and CHAINS on their tires helping to pull people who were stuck.
Even then, they couldn't get all the way home, so some nice strangers who had a handicapped ramp into their house
allowed them to come in, use the bathroom etc, and wait until thing warmed up a bit more.
They even made the local news:
Rebecca Watters: "I wish I could tag these amazing strangers. I walked down to Veterans Memorial Highway to bring food and water to stranded motorists. We found a woman and her quadriplegic husband that were stuck in her car all night. They had no food or water and couldn't walk because he is wheelchair bound.
These amazing men used their own chains on the woman's car. They helped the couple navigate to a complete stranger's house so that they could get in from the cold. The stranger opened their doors to this woman and her handicapped husband.Gestures like this should restore everyone's faith in humanity."
Local News
They still had to have help getting all the way home.
