Blue Mud Dauber Wasp vs Wolf Spider

in photography •  7 years ago

Today while walking around one of the coolest photograph opportunities I've ever had. A Blue Mud Dauber Wasp fought and killed a Wolf Spider and was dragging the Wolf Spider to a makeshift nest. All shots were taken with a Canon 80D camera.

In the first set of shots, you can see the wasp dragging the Wolf Spider around, trying to find a place to settle with it. The spider had to be double the wasp's weight, making it that much more impressive.

The next shot is of the wasp as it was pulling the spider into a makeshift nest under some leaves of grass and leaves that had fallen from a tree.

The next shots are of the wasp as it is sitting outside where it placed the spider, guarding it from any intruder that might want to steal it's prey. Wasps have been known to kill other insects, sometimes even left them alive, and layed eggs inside their bodies, so when the larvae are born, they have a food source immediately.

One of the coolest sites I've ever seen. I've seen ants and spiders carry around other dead insects, but I've never seen a wasp do this kind of handywork. Truly an impressive thing to see.

Rad shots! I dig the closeups👍

I used to watch paper hornets hunt wasps on the security camera at work last fall, it is cool you were able to get pictures. Thanks for sharing.

What interesting pictures, I congratulate you. By the way, how does the puppy continue?
