These are shots I was able to take today of the Dichromorpha viridis, also known as the Short-Winged Grasshopper. All shots were taken using a Canon 80D camera.
The grasshopper in this photo is a male grasshopper. The way to distinguish between a male and female is a male is two colors, most often green on it's back, while the sides of it are brown. A female Short-Winged Grasshopper is one solid color. Also the way to distinguish a grasshopper from a cricket is that a grasshopper has short antennaes on it's head, while a cricket's is very long. As you can see, these are short, thus the grasshopper distinction.
Interesting fact: in order to avoid being attacked by a predator, a grasshopper will flap it's wings fastly, giving off a bright color, and in turn, the distraction will often allow the grasshopper the time to escape unscathed. The more you know...
What an interesting creature.
Very interesting! Great pictures and insect facts. Love it. Keep them coming!

What other things differentiate a cricket from a sdalmamontes? ... Let's see:
.- Observe the time of day when you see the insect. The crickets are nocturnal, which means they prefer the night. Grasshoppers are diurnal, so you'll find them during the day.
.- Note the time of day when you listen to the insect. If you hear an insect song at night, it is most likely a cricket. Since they are nocturnal, they use their songs to communicate and mate at night. Grasshoppers make most of their call during the day but, because they have the light in their favor, they also rely on their keen eyes to meet other grasshoppers.
.- Look at the color of insects. Grasshoppers are more vivid green than crickets. This helps them camouflage well in their grass habitats. The crickets are darker, of a pale green or brown color, because they need it to camouflage themselves well in the shadows and the night.
.- Look at the wings of the insects. If the wings are bright colors, it is very likely that this insect is a grasshopper. These communicate with other grasshoppers showing their lower wings as they fly. If the wings are atrophied or absent, it is a cricket, since the crickets do not fly.
.- Measure the antennae of the insect. The antennae of a cricket are larger than those of a grasshopper, approximately the length of the abdomen of the cricket.
.- Find the ears of the insect. A cricket has its ears on its legs. You can see the ears of a cricket if you are looking for a single white dot near the curve of each front leg. The legs of a grasshopper are located on his abdomen.

The truth, I had never put to think about the differences between a cricket and a grasshopper, and notes the interesting topic.
