Guy Harvey speaks at Florida Southern College

I had the great opportunity, along with fellow Steemian @bwells to see famed Marine Biologist and world class painter Guy Harvey speak at my college Florida Southern College (FSC) today.

He has grown to fame through much of his artwork that has been turned into clothing apparel in recent years, but he made his name as a marine biologist and wildlife conservationist.

His story is quite interesting. He was born in West Germany, but grew up in Jamaica. He actually is a 10th generation Jamaican of English heritage, which throws you off, because his accent sounds Australian.

He has had many documentaries air on the Discovery Channel about marine wildlife, including one where he jumped into the ocean and connected two fishing lines together, something that is extremely dangerous, in order to help them tag and track a 15 foot Marlin.

Also part of his speech was him receiving an honorary chancellorship from the college, a highly esteemed honor.

If you love marine life and have a love for the ocean, I truly suggest delving into some of Dr. Harvey's work. One of his amazing projects took place in 1997, when he teamed with Pompano Beach Fishing Rodeo to sink a ship, one which he actually painted marine life on, in order to make a home for thousands of fish. This is just one of hundreds of examples of his fine work.

His work has been extensive not only in conservation, but in fundraising for other conservation projects, research projects and institutes.

Truly a great man. One of a kind and a man I hope others see as an example of hard work and dedication to helping save the ocean's creatures.
