Today, I captured these shots of a Luna moth on my office front door. This moth can be found from Florida all the way up to Maine. It has also been spotted as north as Nova Scotia. Though seen in the daylight, these moths are actually nocturnal, like most other moths.
One interesting fact about the Luna moth is that they only have vestigial mouths, ergo rudimentary or functionless. Because of this, the Luna Moth does not feed. That is why the only real function of an adult Luna Moth is to lay eggs and also to mate.
Though their lifespan is quite short, they are still quite beautiful. Vivid colors and an impressive wingspan (one of the largest moths in the United States) make them the adoration for insect and nature lovers alike.
