On my travels across the U.S., I've seen many things. I've seen mountains, rivers, swamps, canyons...but still one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen is the Capitol Rotunda, located inside the Capitol Dome in Washington D.C. The Rotunda is known to be the tallest part of the Capitol and, according to those in D.C., is "The Capitol's symbolic and physical heart".
Originally, the construction of the Rotunda was to begin in 1793, but due to ongoing wars and lack of funds, the development of the Rotunda did not begin until 1818. It was completed in 1824.

What is seen in these photos, located in the Rotunda, is referred to as "The Apotheosis of Washington". Created by Constantino Brumidi in 1865, it is supposed to represent George Washington, the first U.S. President, sitting in the heavens amongst exhaulted mythological deities. Much of the work of art has symbolism. Amongst the symbolism is a formed circle of people, 13 maidens to be exact, that is supposed to represent the 13 original colonies. Also worth noting is some of the maidens have their back turned to Washington, which is supposed to symbolize colonies that succeeded.
"The Apotheosis of Washington" is visible through the Oculus, a round or eye-like opening, of the Capitol Dome.

Wicked cool stuff.
If you ever get the chance to go to D.C., make sure you take a tour and gaze at this beautiful work of architecture and artistry. You won't regret it.
