Little Inspirations

Earlier this month I had the opportunity to test the new Fujifilm GFX 50sII camera.

It was a great experience. I was very surprised to find that the combination of body and lens was not much heavier (about 200 grams) than my current camera setup (Fujifilm XT3 with 16-80mm lens) - and this is a medium format camera versus my Fujifilm XT3 being an APSC format camera.

Having a different camera did give me the necessary boost to want to take more photos. I need to confess that the past couple of months I went out more and more without my camera. By the time I returned the Fujifilm GFX camera, my hunger to look for photos was fully restored!

But this post is not about the Fujifilm GFX camera...

Almost every morning on our exercise walk in the park, we see this old couple. What makes them stand out from the crowd of morning walkers and joggers, is that they are always holding hands while walking.

I have photographed them several times in the past, even with my infrared camera (like the photograph below).

A few days ago, we notice the lady standing next to the path, opposite the ablution block, waiting for her husband. I told Xiaoyi that I would like to know more about them. So we stopped and started a conversation with the lady. Unfortunately, she does not speak Mandarin - only Cantonese, so Xiaoyi had to do the talking.

We found out that the lady is 82 years old and her husband is 90 years old. They married in 1960, which means that they are already married for 61 years! She also told us that they walk every morning. She cannot remember when they started walking in this park, but it is many years ago. They do not live close to the park. They are taking the bus from their home to the park.

When the husband returned from the washing room, I asked to take their portrait, and they gracefully agreed.

What a privilege it was to photograph them.

Afterwards, they continued their walk and so did we in the opposite direction. For the rest of our walk we could not stop talking about them;

We, very often find a reason not to do our morning walk, and we are almost 30 years younger than the old man. This made us promise to be more vigilant with regard to our exercise.

By the time we left the park, I realised that we were holding hands since we left their company.

It just felt right...

I liked the portrait for Mr Li and Mrs Huang so much, that, this morning, when our paths crossed in the park again, I gave them the print.
