Steemit photographer user research

in photography •  7 years ago  (edited)

This is the second post exploring a sample of photographer users on Steemit. This post will review some of the findings from the first post and more recent research. Interestingly, the research revealed travel photography is the most popular field for photography posts. I have to admit, it’s been a while since I’ve used SPSS, a statistics application, so please let me know if you can see some other areas to explore the data.

Initial Research
Two graphs appear below from the initial research. The first graph identified a user with the lowest reputation score of (3) which needed a closer look. This user was removed after learning they ‘lacked the integrity’ of a typical Steemit user. The initial research also revealed two daily travel bloggers, with high estimated account values (as @ 31st October 2017): @slowwalker $957 837 and @sweetsssj $283 547 will be explored further at another time.

The graph below was adjusted and now consists of estimated account values based on typical Steemit photographers from our first sample. Two users appear to have moderately higher estimated account values than other users from the sample: @ velimir (Art) US$22 572 and @ deanliu (Travel) with US$30 704.

Current Research
There were some limitations experienced using Steemit’s search function. Searching for quality photographers from various fields was a time-consuming process. This prompted a new search for Steemit photographers associated to either Bescouted, Viewfinder, Steephoto and/or Instagram. I found it easier to locate and review this sample of photographers’ work due to the user-friendly platforms and the way images are presented.

I understand there may be other methods to search for Steemit photographers which could return similar results to the users in this research. I welcome your feedback and suggestions if a better method for searching exists. The following graphs are based on Estimated account value @ 20th December 2017. I believed I had a reliable sample with Photographer’s reputation scores ranging from 42 to 72. A reputation score below 15 would have warranted a closer look. I have included graphs with photographers: number of Followers as well as Estimated Account Values.

The graphs below provide an indication on a sample of quality photographers who contribute to Steemit. Steemit joining dates for photographers in this sample range from July 2016 to date. I think it’s important to keep this in mind if you decide to compare yourself to these users.

A look at the most popular field once again revealed Travel was most popular with Food. I have included a graph with a breakdown on the average estimated values of the various fields contributed to the user in this sample. I acknowledge this is dependent on other variables, for example, Number of Posts and Followers. I have provided it hear as an initial indication of average revenue attributed to the fields from this sample.

What’s Next
Part of this discovery has helped me understand how some successful Instagram users have adapted to posting to Steemit. Other findings helped identify the lack of stock library resources taking advantage of the Steemit blockchain though I did find a user who is working on building for this platform. I recently discovered SocialX (https://socialx.network) which proposes licensing images on a blockchain platform. I’m curious about whether SocialX will attract many steemians and how well it will compete against Steemit.

Understanding Steemit photographer users is fundamental to this research. Future posts will include user interviews and also look at analysing the combined data from these foundation posts. Once again, please feel free to comment.
