Yazidi Refugees

in photography •  7 years ago

I was looking back through my blog and realized that I forgot to post this picture in my post about the Yazidi refugee camp. You can see that post here.

I wanted to talk a little more about the lives of Yazidi boys since I spent most of my time hanging out with them.

This camp was always meant to be temporary- a private organization, The Refuge Initiative, rents this land from a farmer and set up temporary block houses with tin roofs for the families to live in. The Refuge Initiative is also building a community center and permanent housing in and around Soran.

Most of these Yazidi boys get bused into town every day for school until they are old enough to work in the Bazaar in town. Like most of the world, Yazidi and Kurdish boys love playing soccer and were always wanting to play unless it was too hot out. When we weren't playing soccer we would sit around and try (poorly) to communicate in Kurdish.
We would often sit and pick the long grass which worked great as arrows when you would throw them.

Here are some of the boys that we would usually hang out with, sitting around picking grass.

A frozen moment of joy, I love the subtle colouring of your photos. I only have my phone for taking pics with and after checking out all your great shots, mine look super over processed! My mission to get a camera this year and a refresh of photoshop! Keep up the good work, your style looks awesome!

It's so cool how soccer is a universal language. I experienced that living in Morocco - I couldn't really talk to people in Arabic, but we could play soccer together and at the end of the day we were friends despite our inability to communicate with words.

Do they have a decent league over there? I know you said before they are Real and Barca fans, but do they care about the domestic league? And did any of them know of Justin Meram?

Love to read this. Very touching :'(
The picture below made it lighter and I whish them the very bests!
