For centuries, both water and mirrors maintained a catalytic function, through myths, stories and legends, which contained, in itself, the basic principles that in the future would lay the fundamental foundations of a psychology oriented towards the future own knowledge, which, in essence, could be said to be nothing more than an extension of that axiom, basically repeated by each and every one of the great religions of the world, which is summarized in something as simple as: 'know yourself'.
Under this premise, psychologists Joseph Luft and Harrington Ingham devised a method of self-knowledge, which, formed by the acrostics of their names, is known worldwide as 'the Johari window'. An imaginary window, divided into four quadrants - like the four cardinal points, the four rivers of Paradise or the four Evangelists - that contain, in summary, the four aspects that determine our personality and our environment. Or what is the same, our 'I' and the rest of the world: what I know about myself, what I don't know about myself, what others know about me and what others don't know about me.
Durante siglos, tanto el agua como los espejos, mantuvieron una función catalizadora, a través de mitos, cuentos y leyendas, que contenía, en sí misma, los principios básicos que en el futuro habrían de sentar las bases fundamentales de una psicología orientada hacia el propio conocimiento, que, en el fondo, se podría decir que no es, sino una prolongación de ese axioma, repetido, básicamente, por todas y cada una de las grandes religiones del mundo, que se resume en algo tan sencillo, como es: ‘conócete a ti mismo’.
Bajo esta premisa, los psicólogos Joseph Luft y Harrington Ingham, idearon un método de autoconocimiento, que, formado por los acrósticos de sus nombres, se conoce, a nivel mundial, con el nombre de ‘la ventana de Johari’. Una ventana imaginaria, dividida en cuatro cuadrantes -como los cuatro puntos cardinales, los cuatro ríos del Paraíso o los cuatro Evangelistas- que contienen, en resumen, los cuatro aspectos que determinan nuestra personalidad y nuestro entorno. O lo que es lo mismo, nuestro ‘Yo’ y el resto del mundo: lo que conozco de mí, lo que desconozco de mí, lo que los demás conocen de mí y lo que los demás desconocen de mí.
