So it has come to my attention that my family and I lived in Virginia for almost 2 years without going to the Yorktown Battlefield. We always had made plans to go, but with two children, excuses were made and we never ended up going.
As we are leaving Virginia soon, I made the command decision to go to the area the defined our country's birth. (go Army). As a Service Member myself, it was very surreal what Soldiers during the revolutionary era went through in order so that we can have the lifestyle we have today.
So as we packed up to go to Historic Yorktown and go to the Yorktown Battlefield. But before we went to visit the battlefield, we stopped by at Yorktown pub and got a bite to eat.
Luckily our daughter was fast asleep until we were able to finish eating!!! The inside of the pub is quite quaint and service is great. IF you are anywhere near historic Yorktown, I would definitely recommend it. Also parking is quite easy to find.
My beautiful, wonderful daughter, Sophia Belle. She is quite the Angel and makes life easy for me and my wife, unlike her older brother!!
My beautiful wife, Jennifer, who gives meaning to my life.
After a quick bite, we walked across the street in order to go take a quick walk by the beach!!
As I said before in my other post. Liam would do anything to play in the water!!
After a few minutes at the beach, we made the quick drive to the visitor's center at Yorktown Battlefield. For military members its FREE, along with 3 adults. However, it was a special day when we went and it was free for everyone.
The battlefield was gorgeous. It was hard to imagine that about 238 years ago there was a battle that would change the course of America forever.
Background, this was the battlefield that General Cornwallis surrender to General George Washington. After the American's and the French took over redoubt 9 and 10, the American and French forces were in a superior position to destroy the British Army. Furthermore, America and France were able to make better use of their artillery in a concentration of fire and destroy the earthen mounds that was to offer fortification. Im sure sickness and disease didn't help the British either.
Whats the sound of artillery "boom, boom". Liam loved the cannon that is in the background. True fact: this was one of the cannons that Cornwallis surrender to Washington and was actually present during the Revolutionary War!
When we went outside, the sky was so clear and beautiful!
You can overlook the York River. It was actually amazing as Yorktown was a farmland and even though there are trees now, there would be less trees that would allow a clear line of sight for miles!
Earthen Mounds surrounded the entire battlefield. So the British, when fortifying Yorktown, created huge mounds from the earth in order to create protection from the enemy. Remnants remain and my son loved climbing it.
This shot is from the bottom the mound looking up!
Liam after he successfully climbed up!
All in all this place is amazing and you can get guided tours and learn more about the battle that ,in a way, paved a road to this great country. It is humbles and stirs a sense of pride when you learn of the brave men who gave their lives and fought for something greater than themselves. I would definitely recommend visiting the Battlefield of Yorktown. Only warning is, watch out for cacti!!
Until Next Time!!!
