Cryptopia - Page #001 re-draw w/ feedback from @catapanoart!

in photography •  8 years ago

Late night post from the east coast, Steemit. It’s my last night here in Pennsylvania before leaving for NYC tomorrow morning. Lots to do. I have three shoots in two days. Tomorrow afternoon, I’ll be shooting my close friend, Miss Violet Vixen. The next morning, I have a serendipitous shoot with a model I have’t worked with since 2015 named Molly Morrison; absolute bombshell blonde from Texas. Can’t wait for that! Lastly, Tuesday afternoon, I’ll be shooting NY model and female tattoo artist, Alisha Gory for my upcoming book, Dark Pinup. There’s a lot of pieces that still have to fall in to place in the next 72 hours, but everything will work out. It always does.

I had an eventful day. Our family went kayaking on the Susquehanna river. It didn’t unfold like any one had planned […or hoped]. The long form version of our kayak trip I’ll leave for @vermillionfox and @guthrie to explain since they have the photos and videos to accompany the story. @guthrie was experiencing crippling anxiety over the tiniest of dragonflies landing in his personal bubble. This eventually lead to him crying, which in turn lead to @bonni crying, which lead my stepfather to up-end his kayak and fall in, which finally resulted in me jumping in the water to help him back up. That chain of events ended with me realizing my phone was still in my pocket, which is now…dead.

I’ll be stopping at the Lehigh Valley Apple Store at 10:00a.m. on my way to NYC, and all things going well, I should be back in business before my first shoot. Seriously, I am expressing the deepest appreciations to everyone that follows me, reliability votes for the crap I post here, and the entire Steemit team for making this place a reality. I can promise you, pre-Steemit, this would have been a debilitating situation for me on the road. I know this, because it’s happened. I’ve been left penniless and phoneless in LA, not being able to communicate with clients or get to shoots. Today, as much as it sucks to do when STEEM is down, I was still able to move 200.000 STEEM through @blocktrades and have the funds I need to buy a replacement. These are the real world examples of how Steemit has drastically improved my life. Thank you!

Today’s art is a redraw from page one of my Cryptopia comic, inspired by Steemit. I posted this page originally a few weeks ago. A crazy talented, professional comic book artist named @catapanoart commented on the page, left some great feedback, and graciously offered some suggestions to improve the composition. Constructive criticism is dicey with some artists, but I always welcome it, especially from someone as skilled and experienced as @catapanoart. He gave me some clear direction on how to improve the page design. I took it to heart and thought about how I could implement those suggestions.

It took a few weeks to carve out the time. I tried cutting and moving around elements in Procreate, but ultimately, I decided it just needed to be re-drawn. That’s a scary thing to undertake. People at this distance are a weak spot for me in comics, as are backgrounds. The new drawing would need a lot of attention on both, but I decided to go for it. The perspective an background building improvements have given so much more depth to the top panel, and the shadows on the inside of the casket are going to leave an eerie exclamation of the dried face of the body within. I can already see how this is going to look inked.

I’m much happier with this first page, but I really have to thank @catapanoart and Steemit for bringing artists together and hosting such a positive community for us to help one another. Thanks for reading. I post daily. For more comics, illustration, photography and thoughts on the dangerous of kayaking, follow me @kommienezuspadt!

I'd been drawing for a couple hours and it was one of those nights where nothing was coming out good. It basically turned into a 2 hour erasing session. I took a break to eat a few cheerios.... saw your most recent post here... and got inspired to pop open Procreate. The night is saved! I'm having a great time sketching. No need to go to sleep frustrated. As always you inspire me and I appreciate it.

Condolences on your phone and have a safe trip home! I'll be keeping an eye out for when you may be swinging east for a visit again. It'd be great to meet you and I could easily make it to Scranton to hang at a coffee shop for an afternoon!

Wow, that was so cool. I had no idea what went into drawing comics. You got me interested. Thanks.

Thanks for sharing your re-draw and good luck with your upcoming shoots!

Geez Mr.! You are such a well rounded artist, a true renaissance man. Sorry about your phone but your day looked worth it!

Have a safe flight and a great time tomorrow!

Great art

Congratulations!

Thank you for teaching people the pageflow!
More Power to you!

I like your first copy because it does guide the eye to read from left to right, covering all the other characters you put so much effort into.
But the second picture (I have not looked at your video due to limited streaming in the office), I am not sure, it feels the right side became kind of empty.
Who was the guy asking whether the dead body looked familiar?
Is the main character being asked?
Maybe before showing the details of the dead body, the impression of the person being asked, (maybe the eyes) is shown?
Making this page more mysterious / drama to the plot?
Just a thought.

Awesome work by the way! I never drew that extent for a REALLY long time.

Hi Lars. The progress on your Cryptopia comic is commendable. It's great to see how you took @catapanoart advice and made the edits, the difference really shows.

*Funny about the kayak episode with your family, sucks about your phone though. Never a dull moment in your world - for sure!

Looking at the picture of you all carrying in your kayak's and then imagining the insanity the ensued is amazing. Looking forward to @vermillionfox details. Commics are looking great. I am sure it is not easy to redraw something from nothing, that you have already done once. From an untrained eye, and your comments, its looks to be time well spent. I was curious if you are interested in possibly drawing up a figure for me. I have been thinking about what I would like to use to brand, or image at the end of my posts every time and I keep picturing a comic version of me in a suit, doing some financial shit. Let me know if that is something that you would possibly consider. If you are going to be at the meetup on the 15th we can chat more then. Hope all wraps up well on your families adventure and you make it back to the land of lakes safely!

Your art is great! You are very talented and i'm going to keep coming back to your blog to check more of your work in the future.

Wow! You've given me quite the praise.

Thanks @kommienezuspadt! You really have a knack for drawing natural looking figures with good scale and proportion. Great progress video! How long have you been drawing? You have implemented all of my criticism and the page is much more dynamic for it. The building in the back looks great, but the perspective seems a bit warped. I think it has to do with the vertical beams and how they line up. This is very minor and can be adjusted in a refinement stage down the line. I'm still very excited to see more from you and this cryptopia world you are building.
As you said (I agree), I want Steemit to become a bastion for creative work and a place where artists of all varieties feel welcome to post and get feedback. Steemit is an incredible platform to build one of the best art communities out there. There's no going back.

Its so cool that you are sharing your talent with others. Your are a true artist...keep it up!

The amount of work that you've put into this one page is astounding. Drawn, re-drawn, layers upon layers, it was mesmerizing to watch the progress! Thanks so much for sharing your process with us!
Criticism can be hard to take, but when it's truly constructive it makes all the difference to helping us grow. Both as artists, and in general.
I'm stoked to see how the comic progresses!
